No oil on the dipstick

Bought the truck from auction. No oil showing on dipstick but I did oil change there was oil that came out about 5 quarts. I changed oil filter and added new 5 30 synthetic oil 6 quarts. Still no oil showing on dipstick but good oil pressure no overheating and no engine light on. No oil leaks that i can see. What could be wrong? Is it safe to drive?

My car has 173000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
My first recommendation is to NOT START this engine until there is sufficient oil showing on the dipstick. Even if there was excessive sludge in the area of the valve covers, after an hour or two, most of the oil should drain back into the crankcase. A bad oil pump would not prevent the oil from coming to the correct level on the dipstick. Be sure to check to see how far down the dipstick goes into the motor. Sometimes new and fresh oil can be tough to see registering on the dipstick as well. If you need help having this addressed, a qualified professional from YourMechanic can come to your car’s location to inspect the oil problem and resolve the issue.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

If you see no oil at the tip of the dipstick, that means your car needs to add oil, it is possible that there is some oil left at the bottom of the oil pan, or no oil left, because the dipstick is not touching the bottom of the oil pan.
Sometimes there are holes instead of marks. If the oil doesn`t reach inside the markings or holes on the dipstick, you need to add at least one quart of oil. If the dipstick is not showing an oil level, you need to add oil immediately.
Oil-filter problem

An oil filter obstruction or blockage can also cause oil pressure to suffer. Oil filters include pressure relief valves. If this valve is damaged, oil will easily pass right through, reducing pressure. It may go without saying, but it is important to also change the oil filter with each oil change.

Your engine should be cool, and you should wait at least 20 minutes to give the oil time to drain fully back into the sump. 4. Check the level again using the dipstick, and keep adding oil in small amounts until you are happy with the level.
Low Oil Level

The oil level dropping below the minimum dipstick line is one of the most common reasons behind low engine oil pressure. Your car`s engine oil level may be low due to an overdue oil change, an oil leak, or wear and tear. Without sufficient oil, the oil pump will not be able to generate enough pressure.

When a car mysteriously loses oil, there are usually two possible causes: either you`ve sprung a leak, or your engine is burning it away. Though you may not see any visible signs of leakage, less noticeable parts like a worn seal or leaky rings may be the culprit.
What can be the cause of lube oil blowing out from a dipstick tube? Change the PCV valve, and check your oil level. If you have filled to the point that the dipstick tube is immersed in oil, crankcase blowby will force oil out the tube.
A clogged oil filter may prevent oil from passing through into the engine, causing low oil pressure. You might also find oil leaks under your vehicle.
Because the oil filter is clogged, it slows down the oil circulating through the engine. This reduction in oil pressure will cause the engine control unit to turn on the oil light. This light turns on for a few different reasons, all of which are related to oil.
Have a rag or paper towel ready and wipe any oil off of the end of the dipstick. At the tip of the dipstick you will see two lines: the lower one indicates that the oil level is one quart low.
There will be two marks on the dipstick to show the optimum level that your oil should be at. Your oil level should be somewhere between the two. If your oil level is below the bottom line, or if there isn`t any oil on the dipstick at all, you should immediately top up your engine oil.
Zero Reading

This is normal only when the vehicle is idling. If this reading occurs at higher speeds it could mean one of three things: 1) the gauge is faulty, 2) the oil level is low, or 3) the oil pump (or its drive) is broken. In any case, switch the engine off and get your engine checked out as soon as possible.

Engines can work without oil, but the effect is so damaging they are only capable of running for less than 30 minutes until failing – and in most cases, it`s a lot quicker than that.
Engine Wear

If the oil level on the dipstick is between “add” and “full,” a possible cause of low pressure would be worn engine bearings, especially if the engine has very high mileage. Excessive wear reduces the original flow restriction, which consequently drops the pressure.

Driving with this light on your dash can cause severe, irreversible engine damage. Although you can`t determine the severity of the oil pressure problem right away, the best thing you can do is to treat it like a worst-case scenario.
Loud popping, knocking, and stuttering noises from the hood of your vehicle are cause for concern, and could be a sign of major engine damage.
Make sure the oil level falls in between the two tic marks on the dipstick and you should be good to go. Color: Black or dark brown. If your car`s oil is dark brown or black in color, it usually means one thing – it`s dirty or has been exposed to heat too often.
Motor oil should be tan, amber, or caramel-hued in color. This is usually the color it is when it comes out of the bottle, so if you see this hue and you also notice that the oil level is between the two tic marks on the dipstick, you`re in good shape.
Is it normal if my car engine throws a few drops of engine oil from the engine when I took the oil cap off while the engine is on? It is normal to have oil flying all over the place if you open it while running. The engine is a sealed unit with crankcase ventilation an integral part of the emission control system.
Automotive oil filters fall into two categories, full-flow and bypass. Bypass oil filters take about 10 percent of the oil pumped from the sump, filter it and then return it to the sump while the remaining 90 percent is delivered to the lubricated components.
Most oil filters with internal bypass valves will crack in the range of 10 to12 psid (pressure differential in pounds per square inch). A new oil filter at engine idle speed may have only 1 psid of pressure drop (often much less).
The inlet check valve prevents oil from draining back from the pump when the engine is shut down. The bypass valve is used in case the filter gets clogged. The valve opens and allows the oil to bypass the filter element and run straight to the engine.
One common question among car owners is whether they can change their oil filters without changing the oil. The good news is that you can absolutely change your oil filter without emptying the oil from your engine. This is because the location of the oil in your engine remains untouched during a filter change.

lost all oil pressure, replaced the oil pump, low oil sensor, oil pressure sensor, oil pan gasket,
ANSWER : The fuel pump will not stay on if you loose oil pressure. This is why it is shutting off. The loss of oil pressure may be from bad crankshaft bearings or camshaft bearings. The engine oil pan should be removed and the oil pump needs to be checked to ensure that you put in the pick up tube seal to the pump and connected the pump to the block. Then remove at least one main bearing cap and inspect the bearings for excessive wear and crankshaft damage. If you need some help with this, consider YourMechanic, as a certified technician can help diagnose the issue with your oil pressure firsthand and help you fix it accordingly.

No oil on dipstick and slightly lower oil pressure
ANSWER : Hello. If you are checking the oil at the dipstick and it is being added to the correct area then you more than likely have a serious internal sludge issue. If there is a lot of sludge then the oil cannot properly return to the oil pan. I typically remove the valve covers to inspect for this as there should be no other reasons why the oil would not return to the oil pan. If you need to have this problem checked out, consider having a technician from YourMechanic come to your home or office to diagnose the low oil level and make the necessary repairs.

Oil consumption. Burning oil. Oil light turns up on idle.
ANSWER : Hi there, thanks for writing in. The valve stem seals are the most common cause of this on your engine. When they fail, it requires that the cylinder heads be removed and rebuilt to fix it. The piston rings can also cause this but they are not as common. Unfortunately there is not anything, not even heavier oil that will fix this. You will need to have the heads rebuilt.

Stop car check oil warning
ANSWER : This light will usually come on when one of two things are happening. Either the motor is in fact low on oil or the oil pressure sending unit is not working properly and may be producing a faulty reading. I would recommend first, to check the actual oil level in the motor by using the dipstick. Be sure the oil level reaches the "full" mark. If this registers as "full" then you likely have a faulty oil pressure sending unit. I would recommend having an expert from YourMechanic come to your location to take a look at your vehicle to determine what may be causing your low oil pressure light to come on.

Low oil pressure light comes on when idle. Check engine light is on as well. Both came on after getting an oil change 3 days ago.
ANSWER : It is possible that they put in the wrong viscosity oil. In rare instances, a defective filter will also cause low pressure. If there is too much oil, it will aerate and cause low pressure. Be sure the oil level is really not above "max". The P2187 code will appear if the oil fill cap is not tight but it will also appear due to a myriad of causes because that code only "generally" identifies a lean running condition. Consequently, numerous parts would have to be tested including the O2 sensor, gas cap seal, manifold air leaks, any vacuum leak anywhere including PCV and EVAP systems, exhaust leaks, and fuel system faults such as failing fuel pump, clogged filter and more. Since the car has relatively low mileage, you would not expect a failed oil pump, although the pressure sensor (or switch) could be bad. However, the occurrence of the oil pressure warning light is quite coincidental to the oil change, thus I would suggest bringing the car back and asking them to redo with a new filter and double check the viscosity of the new oil that they use. If the problem persists after that, you will have to test actual operating oil pressure (at idle for instance) as well as the oil pressure switch. Finally, if the oil pressure warning light comes on continuously, unless the warning circuit itself is malfunctioning, that means the oil pressure is too low to operate the engine without damaging it. Anytime the light comes on for more than literally an instant, you should shut down the car and thus an issue like this obviously has to be repaired.

If you’d like, a YourMechanic certified mechanic can come to your home or place of business to inspect the vehicle and perform an oil pressure light is on inspection to diagnose the vehicle and suggest potential repairs.

2006 BMW oil filter gasket keeps breaking and oil leaks from oil filter. Oil leaks only after starting car in morning. PCV valve?
ANSWER : Hi There,
It sounds like you may need to replace the oil cap o-ring. If you haven’t done this before there are two O-rings to replace; a small green one on the base of the filter cap stem and the large black one that seals the filter cap (which seems to be the one you are having issues with). The large O-ring sits in a small square-shaped groove that is at the base of the oil filter cap. It is very easy to not properly seat the large O-ring because the threads for the oil cap are quite large and will accept the O-ring if you are not careful. I would suggest having a professional from YourMechanic come to your location to take a look at your vehicle.

Oil still leaking after I changed oil filter
ANSWER : Unless there is an imperfection (e.g., serious pitting or irregularities) on the engine mounting base for the filter gasket, the leak is probably not at the filter. There are other adjacent potential leak spots such as the oil pan gasket, oil pressure sending unit and so forth. If the leak is significant at all, merely thoroughly cleaning the suspect area and running the engine while looking for the leak should be sufficient. If you still can’t find the leak origin, a UV visible dye can be added to the engine oil which will then make the leak point visible using a detection light. If you want these steps performed by a certified Mechanic, dispatched by YourMechanic right to your location, please request an oil leak diagnostic and the responding certified mechanic will get this taken care of for you.
