Hi there. Unfortunately, there are multiple components that could cause your Toyota Sienna to not start; especially after an overheating issue. You might be better served to consult with a local mechanic that can come to your location and complete a car is hard to start inspection.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced mechanics :

If the engine will not crank then the starter circuit needs to be tested to see if there is a wiring issue. If it is cranking and not starting then the computer needs to be checked with a scan tool to see if it is getting a crank signal from the crank sensor. If not then it may be a sensor or circuit problem.
Pull the plugs and disconnect the fuse for teh fuel pump. Turn the engine over with the starter until the oil pressure light goes off or at least about 30 seconds. put the plugs and fuse back in and start the car, let it idle for a few minutes to get to temp. Check for leaks, let the car warm up.
A car can start if the head gasket is blown, but it can also not start. It depends on how the gasket blew. Overheating of the engine can cause warpage in the block or head or both. The warpage is just enough for the gasket to give out.
It`s important to check components like the radiator and the water pump, as well as the coolant itself (which may have become contaminated). A problem with one of these could lead to an overheating engine, even after a head gasket replacement.
How long does it take to fix a blown head gasket? Replacing the gasket can take anything from six hours to a few days, depending on the severity of the failure. A blown head gasket is one of the biggest failures your car can suffer, and to fix it properly takes time.
Many mechanics believe that 4 hours of cure time is sufficient to return a vehicle back to service when using silicone gasketing products. There are gasketing formulas that allow an immediate return to service, such as Permatex The Right Stuff®. However, most gasketing products require 24 hours of cure time.
What to Do When a Gasket Blows. If you`re driving and suddenly notice a misfire — or the engine sounds funny — pull over and stop the car. Driving with a blown head gasket is an easy way to make things worse. It`s best to have your car towed to a mechanic to investigate the part`s integrity.
Yes if the leak isn`t too bad. You will need to keep check on your oil level. Yes you will have a vacuum leak depending on the severity of the bad gasket! It could cause a rough running engine!
I know folks who used it and they are driving there cars for years.. so you have to weigh the risks and the worth of the vehicle. But no, cannot put it in if it won`t start.
You can still have a blown head gasket but no evidence of coolant mixing with oil or the “milky” white oil. That`s because the head gasket can fail in a way that only allows the coolant to get into the combustion chamber, leak to the outside of the engine, and never mix with oil.
The short answer is yes. Head gasket sealers can temporarily fix a leaking head gasket, but they`re not a permanent solution. These products last a little while and can only do so much; eventually, the wear and tear will need to be dealt with for your car to run properly again.
Depending on how severe the leak or perforation is, a car usually does not last longer than a month with a blown head gasket.
Engine knocking or stalling starts when valve cover gaskets fail to separate the valve cover and cylinder head. As a result, the engine takes some time to start due to fuel loss.
The purpose of the valve cover gasket is mainly to keep oil from leaking out of the cylinder head area during operation as oil is circulated up through the valve train. This should not impact the car`s ability to start.
Although valve cover gaskets don`t necessarily need sealers or cements, it`s a common practice to glue the gasket to the valve cover. There are a number of sealant choices, too. For this application, Permatex No. 1, RTVs or Permatex High Tack gasket sealant work well.
Engine codes

If you see error code p0300, it points to an issue with your head gasket.

I know folks who used it and they are driving there cars for years.. so you have to weigh the risks and the worth of the vehicle. But no, cannot put it in if it won`t start.
Loss of power or difficulty accelerating, often alongside other symptoms such as white smoke from the exhaust and low coolant levels, can be a symptom attributed to a blown head gasket.

Changed head gasket car won’t start.
ANSWER : Hi there:

In most cases when a cylinder head gasket has been pushed due to overheating, it can cause additional damage to valve train hardware; most of the time problems with valve guides. However, if you’ve double checked all hardware; you might want to look into the ignition system; perhaps the crankshaft position sensor is damaged (which happens most of the time during an overheating issue). If you can’t find the source of your issues, feel free to contact one of our local mobile mechanics and have them complete a car will not start inspection; so they can help you diagnose the problem.

My car will not start Intermittently. I purchased a new battery 2 weeks ago and yesterday the car wouldn’t start. Got a jump and
ANSWER : The issue you are having is probably due to an intermittent fault in the starter motor itself or a deficiency in the starter electrical circuit, for example a large voltage drop due to a poor ground or a high resistance connection. These issues can be readily diagnosed and resolved on a mobile basis if you request a hard starting diagnostic. If you request that diagnostic, the responding certified mechanic will get this resolved for you promptly. Based on Toyota’s Factory Service Manual, the battery should not be disconnected if the vehicle engine is running. The battery acts as a large resistive voltage sink and consequently taking the battery out of the circuit, while the alternator is still running, can create a voltage spike on the car’s electrical system which is not good for voltage sensitive components such as the engine computer. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.

Honda Civic 2008 after replace blown head gasket car take long to start
ANSWER : If vehicle is hard to start after the engine head was removed then you may need to double check the timing of the timing belt was set correct and the engine has no codes for the cam sensor set because of it. You may have timing off one tooth. You should also check engine compression.

Car won’t start. The check engine light, battery light, and oil change light are coming on. I tried jumping the car and nothing happened. Why won’t my car start?
ANSWER : Hi and thanks for contacting Your Mechanic. If sometimes your vehicle will start with the new alternator and sometimes it won’t, then there is a loose connection in your charging system. Check all of the wires to the alternator and to the battery. Make sure that the battery cables are clean and tight. Make sure that the wires to the starter are clean and tight. A loose ground to the ignition system will cause the vehicle to not crank over. Check all of the ground wires from the battery to the starter. Make sure that they are clean and tight. If you need further assistance troubleshooting your no start situation, then seek out a technician, such as one from Your Mechanic, that can assist you.

Map sensor car won’t start up good ?
ANSWER : Your MAP sensor is an important input for your computer. It helps determine the load on the engine to calculate the correct amount of fuel to inject. It sometimes takes a few seconds for the vehicle to realize that the sensor is not producing a good signal.

At that point, it will use other methods to determine the fuel rate, such as pre-programmed fuel maps, throttle position, etc. I would suggest replacing the MAP sensor and retesting. If you would like to have it checked first, a certified technician from YourMechanic will be able to scan your vehicle and test components to determine the root cause of your starting issue before making a repair.

2005 Chrysler 300C changed battery and alternator. Car started, ran, and then battery light came on. Shut car off and wouldn’t start.
ANSWER : Hi. There is a couple of things that could be wrong here. The battery or alternator that was just installed could be defective. Theses parts need to be tested for proper operation. There also could be a fuse, fusible link, or wiring for the battery or charging system that is blown or broken causing the battery light to come on.

The codes that you have will cause the car to shut down, run rough, or not start at all. The crankshaft sensor and camshaft sensor should be replaced. I suggest having a certified technician from YourMechanic come diagnose the charging system and check engine codes to help you proceed with correct repairs.

i have a 1994 z28 and i did a head gasket replacement for some blown head gaskets. I then tried changing the timing gears and when
ANSWER : Hi there. It really depends on the location of the motor (meaning if it’s installed in the vehicle or loose and on an engine stand), that would factor into the price and whether this is a project one of our mobile mechanics can complete. We can complete the oil pan gasket replacement, but some of the other jobs like wiring harness, intake and rocker arm installation is outside of our scope of service. In regards to estimates for those services, I would suspect it would cost anywhere from $400 to $1,000 based on where it’s completed and what supplies would be needed.
