Can a jeep run and drive without a water pump??

Hello!
So I've been car shopping on Craigslist and I came across a really nice 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee with only 156k mikes and no rust. The only problem that the lady selling it told me about is the water pump. She said everything is great on it except the water pump. So if I replace the water pump, will that be it or do other things go out when the water pump does? Can something else go out from driving it with no water pump or can you even drive it at all with no water pump?
I'm just concerned that maybe once I replace the water pump, more things that the lady failed to tell me ab
Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Driving or running the engine without the water pump working to circulate the coolant through the motor will cause the motor to overheat and may damage the engine costing thousands of dollars versus using a tow truck to take the vehicle to the shop that will cost a lot less. I would not recommend running the engine more than a few minutes at a time or you will overheat it.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

It is possible to drive your vehicle without a water pump, but not good to. Some people in the racing circuit or who drive racing vehicles purposefully remove their water pumps to obtain more horsepower to their engine. If you are driving a vehicle for everyday use though, a water pump is a must.
Without a correctly running water pump, your engine will overheat in the summer or freeze in the winter. This can not only cause damage to the gaskets, cylinder heads and pistons, it often results in total engine failure.
Not far. Without coolant circulating through the engine, it heats fairly rapidly. I`d say within 15 minutes of your water pump going out (or belt snapping… whatever) you`re gonna have a seized engine if you keep driving.
If the water pump fails, it is unable to circulate the coolant around the engine. It causes the engine to overheat as a consequence. If the engine overheats, it will likely cause additional damage, such as blown head gaskets, cracked cylinder heads, damaged rings, and burnt pistons.
Running a pump without water which we call it dry running, can cause significant damage to the pump and can finally lead to the motor burnt. When a pump runs without water, the pump`s internal components generate heat due to friction, which can cause the seals, bearings, and other parts to overheat and fail.
But it is possible to run a motor without one – but highly unlikely. If you plan on keeping your car, then you definitely need to have a new water pump installed, flush out the coolant system, and make sure all the coolant hoses are clean and free of holes.
Without a working water pump, your car can be severely damaged by overheating. Your car`s water pump cannot last forever, and it can become unusable if damaged. If this happens, it is significant to replace it as soon as possible to prevent much more damage to your vehicle.
Pumps should not run longer for 1 or 2 minutes. The reason is this could cause motor damage.
You can drive until the pump seizes, and you burn up the serpentine belt and lose your alternator and power steering, and your engine overheats to destruction. You can drive while the pump leaks coolant until the coolant level falls below the level of the impeller, and your engine overheats to destruction.
Finally, if you hear a high-pitched whining noise that comes from the front of your vehicle`s engine, it could be a sign that the water pump is dying. The water pump uses a pulley or belt in its operation, and if this pulley is too loose, it will make a whining sound that some describe as harmonic buzzing.
Your car`s water pump is always running when the engine is on, so you can`t really go by the number of kilometers on the odometer when trying to work out how much life is left in your pump. If your car`s water pump is driven by the timing belt, the belt must be renewed at the same time as the pump.
You won`t get far without coolant. After a few miles, the engine will start overheating if so, and may automatically cut off to protect internal components from heat damage. If it doesn`t have this safeguard, you risk serious engine damage if you continue driving.
Can you drive a car with a leaky water pump? Yes you can, but there are a few risks. Your car could overheat because the coolant level becomes low. Proper coolant is expensive, so the leak has a certain cost.
When a pump runs dry, it runs without any liquid going through it. This is always a bad idea, as it puts an inordinate amount of strain on the pump`s moving parts. Instead of circulating fluid, a dry running pump pushes nothing but air around, leading to friction, heat, and destruction of delicate internals.
This often happens when the pump is frequently turned on and off and there is improper care and installation. Make sure all electrical connections are working and that the pump is installed correctly. A pump can also burn out from having the pump run dry.
The water pump is one of the vehicle components that may never require replacement if your vehicle is well-taken care of. You can own a car for over 15 years and never have to replace the water pump. That`s not to say that it can`t develop a problem.
The pump may not leak coolant, but the pump mechanism itself may have failed. Over time the fins of the pump can actually wear down to the point where they are no longer moving coolant. Cavitation can eat away at the metal pump vanes and pump surfaces.
It`s not recommended to drive a vehicle with a damaged water pump; especially if the bearings are damaged. If the water pump fails while you are driving, it`s possible your engine will suffer serious damage.
5. The Car Is Losing Power. This can happen for several reasons, but one of the most common is that the water pump cannot circulate the coolant properly. This can cause the engine to overheat, leading to a loss of power.

Can a jeep run and drive without a water pump??
ANSWER : Driving or running the engine without the water pump working to circulate the coolant through the motor will cause the motor to overheat and may damage the engine costing thousands of dollars versus using a tow truck to take the vehicle to the shop that will cost a lot less. Cranks and runs rough have to keep foot in gas to keep running. Has new fuel pump and died while driving after pump was changed
ANSWER : Check fuel pressure. There are only three possible explanations: a fault in fuel supply (plugged filter, injectors, etc.); ignition system problems; and air induction including the idle air control valve, throttle position sensor, mass air flow sensor and vacuum leaks including the PCV and EGR systems. If obvious, and easy to check, possibilities do not reveal the fault, the recommended service to request is a rough running diagnostic and the responding certified mechanic will travel right to your location and get this diagnosed and resolved for you. It is also possible that diagnostic trouble codes have set and the mechanic will attempt to retrieve those using an appropriate scan tool. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic.

After sitting without running for a long while, sometimes in-tank electric fuel pumps won’t start.
ANSWER : Check the power supply to the fuel pump, at the fuel pump terminals (as close as you can get) to be sure that the circuit actually functions. If there is power to the pump, but no operation, it is possible the fuel has oxidized, turned to varnish and other compounds, and basically glued the pump "shut". Also, it is not just a matter of air in the tank (oxidizing the fuel) but also moisture in the tank. Over so many years, the pump could be sitting in water simply due to accumulated water from condensation. If the tank has lots of water at the bottom, if it is a metal tank you might even need a new tank due to the possibility of internal corrosion. Although I suppose you could figure out a way to "unstick" a fuel pump that has sat in oxidizing fuel, and possibly water, for so many years, it is not worth it on account of safety and reliability considerations. If there is power and the pump doesn’t work, I would install a brand new pump and of course very carefully inspect the interior of the tank being mindful not to blow it up. Use a low power LED light…don’t use a 120 volt trouble light around fuel or, much worse, around fuel vapors. If you desire that the pump be replaced by a certified mechanic and the tank be inspected, simply request a fuel pump replacement. If you have additional concerns or questions, by all means please let us know.

My water pump just dumped all its fluid. Is it safe to drive my truck if I fill it back up with water without a new pump?
ANSWER : Anytime there is no or low coolant in a vehicle, it can be very harmful to the engine. Low coolant can cause a seized engine or a blown head gasket.

It is recommended that you have the vehicle towed to a location to have the cooling system repaired. If you can, refill the engine with coolant, and if the fluid does not run out as quickly as you put it in, then you may be able to drive a short distance to a safe location, but it is not recommended.

If you need assistance, get a mobile mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, to inspect and determine the source of the leak, and replace the water pump, if needed.

My water pump is leaking but I replaced timing belt and pump a year ago. Can I just replace the water pump this time?
ANSWER : Hello. You can just replace the water pump in this case. Although, the cost of just the timing belt is fairly negligible in comparison to the total labor of the job. My estimator says the water pump is a 6.5 hour job. Multiply that by whatever the shop rate is and you have the total labor without parts. You end up saving about $100 or less on parts if you only replace the pump.

The deciding factor will be the condition of the timing belt. If it has problems, you won’t be saving yourself any money by reusing it. In addition, there are seals and pulleys that may need to be replaced as well.

Assuming all the related parts were replaced the first time around, there isn’t a reason you can’t reuse them. I would say you should weigh the savings of reusing them against the actual condition of the parts. This is best determined after a complete disassembly. Keep in mind, time estimates will vary a bit depending on many factors. Either way, the labor is the largest cost.

If you would like to have the water pump replaced, a certified professional from YourMechanic can come to your car’s location to perform this service at your convenience.

Runs fine for days then acts like running out of gas and then dies and try restart and runs then dies ,when I turn key on you hea
ANSWER : The fuel pump in the fuel tank is designed to have low pressure and high volume to feed the front fuel pump the right amount fuel. The front fuel pump supplies the engine with high pressure to the engine.

When you do not hear the pump run then the fuel pump is bad and should be replaced along with the relay. You should not have to replace the in tank pump if it is running. I’d suggest replacing the fuel filter as well.

I’d suggest getting this inspected by a qualified technician, such as one from YourMechanic, to diagnose your stalling issue and make the necessary repairs.

I have a 00 deville I just changed the water pump housing and water pump the thermostat and radiator the upper and lower radiator 2000 Cadillac De Ville
ANSWER : Hi there – I suspect your radiator is clogged or otherwise corroded so that it is not shedding heat as efficiently as it should. Idling with the heater on was getting rid of heat without loading the radiator. When you’re driving, the engine is generating more heat than both the heater and radiator can get rid of. Checking the difference between hot coolant going to the radiator (top hose), and going back into the engine (bottom hose) may show that there is very little temperature difference. This means the radiator is not doing it’s job, and need to be professionally cleaned or replaced. Good diagnostic effort on your part to avoid the obvious "it’s another Northstar head gasket" diagnosis! For confirmation, I would recommend an overheating inspection by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs.
