problem with clutch or transmission or both

my friend was driving in 4th gear, accidentally tried to put it into 1st gear, made a grinding noise then she quickly put it back into 4th gear,
now my clutch does not seem to be working, i can start the car with the clutch engaged (although since i am able to start the car with the clutch engaged, the clutch must be working to some extent) but when i put it into 1st gear, it jerks forward and immediately stalls out, is there something wrong with the clutch (it doesn't feel right when you press down on the clutch) or is there a problem with the transmission, or a problem with both?

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
It does not sound like you are having an internal transmission failure. It sounds like you have a clutch issue. Most of the time when this occurs the clutch plate either breaks or the pressure plate loses one of its springs. Both will cause this to occur. It can even be binding in the throw out bearing in the clutch. The transmission would need to be removed from the vehicle in order to properly diagnose this. You should have a transmission specialist check it out.

The Problem: Due to a supplier material change during the production process, O-ring seals between the transmission oil cooler and the automatic transmission may not seal properly, meaning that a leak might develop.
The number one problem affecting the Volkswagen Jetta is a shifting issue with the automatic transmission. Fortunately, this is only affecting vehicles with high mileage. However, this is an expensive fix and might need a transmission replacement.
The problem stems from a hydraulic pressure accumulator housing component that was manufactured incorrectly. VW Golf, Polo, Jetta, Beetle, Passat and Caddy models are affected.
How Reliable Is the 2014 Volkswagen Jetta? The Volkswagen Jetta has a reliability rating of three out of five from J.D. Power. That`s average for the automotive industry as a whole, but below average for the compact sedan class.
The 2014 VW Jetta TDI`s 2.0-liter turbo diesel is a fantastic engine with great torque and reliable efficiency.
Volkswagen of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2014 Jetta, Beetle, Beetle Convertible, and Passat vehicles equipped with a 1.8T engine and torque converter automatic transmission. In the affected vehicles, the O-ring seals between the oil cooler and the transmission may leak fluid.
Expect a VW transmission to last for about 100,000 miles. If your Volkswagen is nearing that mark, you`ll probably need to replace the transmission at some point.
Check the Level

With the engine warmed up, leave the car idling in park on a level surface. Pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean, replace it slowly, and then pull it back out. Check the fluid level—how high the fluid comes up on the dipstick—against the “full” and “low” or “fill” marks on the dipstick.

Spinning Without Engagement. If you step on the gas and your transmission spins without forward movement, you have a problem that needs attention right away. Your automatic transmission has a clutch, too, and spinning is a sign that the clutch is going bad.
As they are constructed in a similar way and of the same material as your standard manual transmission clutch, they also suffer from the same wear and tear issues and failures. DSG clutch wear in the 7 speed gearbox result in clutch judder when accelerating from standstill or when changing gears.
Currently it appears as though the DSG transmissions have solid longevity. Since the transmission is built like a manual, it is mechanically strong. The weak points that will be likely to fail will be the DSG Clutch Packs or the mechatronics unit. These are both replaceable (but expensive) parts.
Still, typical automatic transmissions last around 150,00 to 200,000 miles or approximately 7 years.
“When it comes time to pick an engine for the 2014 VW Jetta, the base 2.0-liter should be avoided, as it`s seriously underpowered and returns subpar fuel economy. The new 1.8-liter turbo four-cylinder is the one to get, as this genuinely engaging mill is blessed with power, refinement and everyday docility.
How Long Will the 2014 Volkswagen Jetta Last? A well-maintained 2014 Volkswagen Jetta should last around 250,000 miles, which is only slightly shorter than the highly-rated Toyota Corolla. Regular annual maintenance costs are higher than average, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $609 per year.
How Frequently Does a Volkswagen Jetta require maintenance? Overall – the Volkswagen Jetta has yearly car maintenance costs total to $609 .
If I were going to buy one, which years of TDIs should I be careful to avoid? Reviewed by Shannon Martin, Licensed Insurance Agent. , you should typically avoid models from 2009-2012. The problem with TDIs dates back to the 2014 Dieselgate scandal.
To tell if your vehicle has DSG, there`s one very easy test – simply look at the top of your gearstick! If your vehicle has DSG, you`ll see these three initials embossed on the top of the stick (or sometimes on the body of the stick, facing the rear of the vehicle).
VW automatic transmission fluid should be changed every 50,000 miles – 60,000 miles. Except for the DSG transmission, which the factory manual recommends be changed every 40,000 miles.
TDI engines will typically have better fuel economy compared to a TSI (especially if you do lots of long motorway journeys), as is usually the case with any diesel engine compared to petrol. TDIs tend to be more expensive to purchase though, and the fuel itself typically costs more per litre.
A well-maintained TDI engine can actually last up to 400,000 to 500,000 miles.
Estimated drive range in the Jetta TDI is 609 miles per tank of gas.
The Clean Fleet Report front-wheel drive 2014 Volkswagen Jetta TDI had the six-speed DSG Automatic with Tiptronic, which included paddle shifters and a “S” Sport setting. It was powered by a 2.0-liter, 16-valve inline four-cylinder, clean diesel engine, delivering 140 hp with 236 lb-ft of torque.
2011 – 2018 VW Jetta (6th Generation)

For this generation, Volkswagen dropped the wagon body style and took away some of the features that made the sedan a premium compact car.

Any unusual shaking or vibrating forces coming from the engine is cause for concern. It could be something as simple as old spark plugs producing an uneven power delivery, it could be something serious like worn or broken engine mounts, or it could be even more serious in the case of internal engine damage.

After starting, the transmission will not go into gear
ANSWER : Hi there. Did you replace the pilot bearing when replacing the clutch assembly? A frozen or seized pilot bearing will behave as you describe. Since you mention having to revert to stock clutch components, it is necessary to confirm proper clutch hydraulic operation, adequate clutch release bearing movement, etc. To have this problem scoped out, a qualified professional from YourMechanic can come to your car’s location to inspect the shifting problem and pinpoint the repairs that are needed.

Why does my clutch pedal sink to the floor and dosent come back up?
ANSWER : Hi – there are 2 main causes for the clutch going all the way to the floor. First – check that the return spring on the clutch pedal is in place. Second – I see you bled the system – bleed the system again. This is how I would do it – use a short length of hose connected to the bleeder screw, run that hose into a cup half full with recommended fluid…fill the reservoir, then have one person pump the pedal while the other opens the bleeder screw and watches until NO BUBBLES come out (and makes sure the reservoir doesn’t run dry). Then close the screw fill the reservoir to the mark, and test her out. If you would consider, YourMechanic can send a certified technician to you and assist you in troubleshooting this clutch issue.

Transmission problems – 1982 Jeep CJ7
ANSWER : Has your clutch been replaced recently? If not, your clutch assembly may be worn out. Check your fluid levels under the hood. At the very least, each reservoir should have fluid in it and you may notice a min/max level indicator on them to show the system level. A low clutch fluid level can also be the sign of a worn clutch or a leak in the system. Consider hiring an experienced technician like one from YourMechanic who can check on these items for you and determine the cause of your problems.

Kia Optima 2004 v6 LX new engine old transmission no problems before with transmission now my transmission is shifting a high rpm
ANSWER : Hi There,
This may be an issue related to the communication of the PCM and the TCM (Transmission control module). As you may know, the TCM relies on the PCM to transmit information related to RPM’s, which the TCM then uses to determine when to direct the transmission to shift. The transmission control module has various sensors such as vehicle speed sensors, wheel speed sensors, throttle position sensors, turbine speed sensor, and transmission fluid temperature sensors that all direct information to it in order for it to perform it’s function. Other functions controlled by the TCM are components such as a kick down switch, traction control system, and cruise control module. Any of these may also affect the way the transmission control module performs and controls the transmission and the shifting of your vehicle. I would suggest having a professional from Your Mechanic come to your location to properly diagnose your transmission problem.

2013 Ford Focus Transmission Issue. Is it worth keeping the car?
ANSWER : Hi There,
This is a known issue in this generation Ford Focus and some Fiestas with the "Power Shift" transmission and there have been numerous recalls and lawsuits. Although, it is would be difficult to determine how much longer your transmission will last given the fact that you have many new parts, I would not recommend junking the car as it may still provide some valuable life left for you. I would recommend taking it to the dealer to see if these parts may be covered under the recall.

Transmission problems and the car is pretty new
ANSWER : The transmission on your car has electronic controls and shift solenoids which control gear changes. I suggest getting a thorough test on your transmission to determine possible causes of the failure before overhauling the transmission. The computer should be scanned for codes and all wiring should be checked. Check the transmission fluid for signs of being burned or contaminated. The transmission cooler and lines should also be flushed out. Since your car is not drivable, contact YourMechanic to check the transmission and get a diagnosis so you do not replace the transmission if only a solenoid in the transmission is bad.

Electrical or transmission problems with Hummer
ANSWER : Hi there. This vehicle is known for having a history of electrical issues. From the symptoms you are getting it sounds like a bad ignition switch or a failing body control module. Most of the time it is the ignition switch. When it fails internally it causes these systems to act up almost like the key is being turned off and on. This can be diagnosed with a voltage meter by doing a voltage drop test on the switch. If the switch is fine then the body control module will need to be replaced. If this is something that you want to have diagnosed, consider YourMechanic, as a certified mechanic can come to your office to inspect your electrical problems.
