Is $2300 too much to pay to replace 2 cat converters for a 2007 Pathfinder?

I got a quote from a nearby Nissan dealer of $2300 to replace both of my catalytic converters. I think he mentioned that they have to replace cores also. I don't remember the engine code but he said both Bank-1 and Bank-2 need to be replaced. I didn't know I had 2 cats. He told me that I could probably replace them myself, but I would be looking at about $700 for each converter. Does $2300 sound correct?
Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hello, thank you for writing in. Your particular make and model does utilize a catalytic converter on both sides of the engine. Catalytic converters are going to vary in price depending on the brand of replacement parts that you are getting. The price may go up if the shop only has access to certain parts, and dealership specific parts in particular can get expensive. Hence why there is such a market for other OEM parts. You may want to do some shopping online on your own and see what other replacement catalytic converts are going for. While the price is fair, it is higher than other exhaust and muffler shops might charge. Contact our service department for a quote from our technicians.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced mechanics :

Most modern cars use three-way catalytic converters. These convert carbon monoxide, unburned hydrocarbons, and nitrous oxides into less harmful gases.
If you`re experiencing a slow engine ability, lowered acceleration, a smell of rotten eggs or sulfur from the exhaust, dark exhaust smoke, or extreme heat coming from under the vehicle, they are symptoms of a clogged Catalytic Converter, and it should get replaced soon.
The average cost for a Nissan Pathfinder Catalytic Converter Replacement is between $1,631 and $2,254. Labor costs are estimated between $337 and $425 while parts are priced between $1,294 and $1,829.
A common emissions code seen in the field, a P0420 trouble code indicates that the catalytic converter isn`t functioning efficiently.
Code P0420 indicates that the catalytic converter is not functioning efficiently, therefore increasing the output of harmful pollutants by the vehicle.
A vehicle will have a catalytic converter for each exhaust pipe—so while most cars will just need one, dual exhaust vehicles will need two.
To test for blockage, Access a pressure point before the catalytic converter, install a back pressure gauge and measure the back pressure. Normal reading should be less than 9 kPa @ idle and less than 20 kPa @ 2500 RPM. A high reading indicates the catalytic converter may be damaged or blocked.
Most catalytic converter failures fall under one of three categories: Overheated, melted or broken converters.
When the converter first starts showing signs of failure, it will not immediately affect the engine. Left unchecked, however, it will eventually degrade and collapse, plugging the exhaust, which will choke vehicle performance and limit the life of the motor.
Fits: 2001 2002 2003 2004 Nissan Pathfinder 3. 5L All 4 Catalytic Converters.
A P0420 code indicates that your vehicle`s computer (PCM) has detected a problem with the catalytic converter. The catalytic converter`s function is to break down dangerous pollutants produced during the combustion cycle, lowering emissions released through the exhaust pipe.
The P0420 code signals a low catalyst system efficiency. This code suggests that the oxygen levels are below the desired threshold (Bank 1), which most often results from problems with your car`s exhaust or fuel systems.
This Fits Your 2007 Nissan Pathfinder. The Catalytic Converter (Front) is an integral part of your Nissan`s exhaust system. The Catalytic Converter (Front) controls emissions by filtering out and reducing toxic gases and pollutants from the exhaust.
Most cars only have one catalytic converter.

But if a car has been modified to have a dual exhaust, it could have two catalytic converters.

Hello. I have to replace both the bank 1 and bank 2 cat. Does bank 1 and 2 refer to "right" and "left"? Thanks
ANSWER : Yes, bank 1 and bank 2 is the same as left and right. Bank 1 is the right side of the engine and bank 2 is the left. Before purchasing and replacing the catalyst, you should have a complete diagnosis of the codes you are receiving from the engine computer. You may need to do additional repairs before the catalyst is replaced or damage to the new catalyst may happen. I recommend having a mechanic verify the computer systems are clear of any problems before you can install the new catalyst. If you would like to have the car checked, a qualified professional from YourMechanic can verify the issue and move forward with any needed repairs.

Check Engine light comes on, mechanic replaced o2 sensor but light still comes on.
ANSWER : Hi there:

If the mechanic completed the O2 sensor replacement, reset the codes and the error code was triggered again, it is possible that the catalytic converter is damaged and needs to be replaced. However, it’s also very common for the electrical harnesses that power these sensors to become frayed, damaged or faulty; which can also trigger the check engine light. It’s not advisable to drive a vehicle with a damaged catalytic converter for extended periods of time, as it can cause damage to internal engine components.

Oxygen sensor Bank 2 Sensor 2 for a 2008 ES350. How much to Repair and Replace?
ANSWER : Hi there. The Oxygen sensors are located on the exhaust system in front of the catalytic converter and behind the catalytic converter. You will need to have a Oxygen sensor socket to remove the sensors. The socket is a deep socket with a cut out on it so the harness to the sensor can fit into the slot as you remove the sensor. Make sure that the harness is unplugged before removing the sensor.

Bank 2 Sensor 1 PA03(?) code. Range performance issue?
ANSWER : Hello. The code you have provided is not a valid automotive error code that I recognize. Based on your context I think it may be possible that there is an issue with the signal range of one of your oxygen sensors. If you’ve replaced the sensors then perhaps the issue may be with the wiring. I would carefully examine the wiring to the oxygen sensors, as well as the connector and contacts for any signs of damage, wear, or corrosion. If the sensors and wiring all check out then it may be possible that the issue is with the computer.

Check Engine Light is on. P0430 code.
ANSWER : The Check Engine Light on for code P0430 is for the right (passenger side) O2 sensor indicating a bad catalyst on the passenger side or right side of the vehicle. Before replacing the catalyst, check all the engine ground connections on the passenger side cylinder head on the front and rear to see if it is loose or corroded. Clean and tighten the connection and clear codes to retest system. If it comes back, then you can replace the passenger side converter. If you would like to have this done, a certified professional from YourMechanic can come to your car’s location to inspect the Check Engine Light and follow through with repairs.

Engine and Transmission mounts have collapsed. Do they have to be replaced immediately? How much for both? TBC….
ANSWER : If the engine mounts are faulty, the drive axles will operate at the wrong angle eventually causing premature wear-out of the axles so it is important to get the mounts replaced. If you would please refer to YourMechanic’s motor mount service page you can obtain the requested price quote. Brake pads generally cannot be replaced without either resurfacing the brake rotors or replacing the rotors if they are not restorable. If you do not follow this procedure the brake pads will wear irregularly, wear out early and you may get brake pedal pulsation and vibration from rotor thickness variation. To request brake service and cost info, please use YourMechanic’s brake pad/rotor service page. How much is a flywheel and torque converter? Are those parts worth replacing on my vehicle?
ANSWER : When the starter was diagnosed as bad the flywheel teeth the starter mate to when trying to turn over the engine may have broken or worn teeth and cannot engage each other anymore. Why the torque converter would need replaced I would need to know if the transmission has a shifting problem? I do not see why it would need to be replaced to get the vehicle to crank over. If you do not trust your mechanic word on the needed repairs then have a second opinion check from another mechanic like one from YourMechanic.
