I can’t go into 4th or 5th gear and clutch does not engage after a recent clutch job, clutch release while in gear does nothing.

I just recently finished a clutch job on my 2003 9-3 2.0t.
I used a sachs clutch kit from europarts and a few gaskets ordered from rockauto.
I did not remove the flywheel during the process, i just replaced the disc and pressure plate and slave. After getting everything back together, it took me a few days to get the bleeding done. And the pedal feels good.
However, i do not need to press the pedal in order to shift into gears. I am only able to shift into 1, 2nd, 3rd, and reverse. 4th and 5th feel like the have walls against them. Regardless if the clutch pedal is pressed or not.
It revs li
Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
I would rule out the axle not being pushed all the way in. That would effect all speeds and gears. That you can engage gears other than 4th and 5th leads me to 2 m possibilities:
1. Shift linkage mis-adjusted.
2. Possible bent shifter fork internally.

If it feels like you can engage 4th and 5th with the engine OFF, then I would lean towards a clutch release issue.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced mechanics :

If the transmission will not move in any gear but 4th gear, then there is either an issue with the synchronizers or the transmission gears are damaged. First check the shifter rail and see if the forks are bent that go to the synchronizers. If the forks are bent, then gears will not catch making the vehicle unusable.
Transmission won`t engage or stay in gear

If when you put your vehicle into gear and it won`t move, this may be a problem with low transmission fluid due to a leak, the shifter, shifter cable, or it could even be a problem in the valve body of your automatic transmission.

A clutch that won`t engage at all means there is serious damage somewhere. Check for a bent linkage, a seized slave cylinder, or a seized throw-out bearing. Beyond those, check for binding in the linkage, a corroded cable, or a failed friction plate.
Probably bushings in your transmission linkage are worn out, and the linkage got jammed. Raise your car up so you can climb under there safely, and check the linkage from the shifter lever to the transmission.
A vehicle that refuses to shift or into gear smoothly indicates there is a problem with your transmission. In most cases, the culprit is your transmission or clutch. A vehicle`s transmission system is very complicated. It has several moving parts, ignoring such an issue could quickly spiral into expensive repairs.
Your clutch might be worn down and may need to be replaced. Other causes of the issue could involve damage to your pressure plate or leaking gear oil. Take your rig to a mechanic for further examination and repair.
If there is no leak, then there may be air in the clutch hydraulic system. I recommend bleeding the clutch slave cylinder and the clutch master cylinder. If you need further assistance with your clutch not working, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.
With a sudden breakdown, the clutch ceases to work entirely and the car won`t move. With gradual failure, you may experience problems such as the car not stopping when you press the pedal. Sudden failure is most often caused by a broken or loose clutch cable, linkable or a failed hydraulic master/slave cylinder.
This is often times a sign of low transmission fluid or a faulty transmission control solenoid. As you know, automatic transmissions use pressurized hydraulic fluid to change gears.

The throttle cables need checking. As we have mentioned earlier that changing the transmission fluid alone solves many transmission-related issues. But, if you change this transmission fluid and your auto transmission still won`t shift into the third gear, the throttle cables are the next suspect.

ANSWER : If the clutch mechanism is releasing properly, and the shift linkage is not malfunctioning, your transmission will have to be removed from the vehicle and inspected. Once a transmission has been removed from a vehicle, if the problem is a broken or worn part or parts, and the transmission has 100,000 miles or more, the most cost effective approach is to just simply rebuild the whole transmission. There are transmission rebuild kits that are sold just for this purpose. Rebuilding a transmission is no big deal and is indeed easier in many respects than rebuilding an engine. You can rebuild your transmission right in your own garage. You can NOT rebuild an engine in your own garage due to the highly specialized, and extremely costly, machine shop equipment required. Occasionally, mobile mechanics will take on a transmission rebuild job especially as once the mechanic removes the transmission from the vehicle, it is just simply a modular unit that can be easily transported to a mechanic’s shop and rebuilt right there and then returned to your vehicle. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.

I have a 1992 Chevy Silverado 1500 that won’t go into gear but the clutch pedal is hard and it still want go into gear when runnin
ANSWER : You should first pump the clutch several times and then hold it down and release air from slave cylinder. Retry the clutch to see if clutch releases. If not then turn off vehicle and put transmission in gear and hold down clutch and make sure your direction in front or behind you is clear and crank motor to see if clutch is free to turn. If still not free then you have ha defective pressure plate and need to replace it. Before that look inside transmission inspection hole and have someone push clutch and see how far the release bearing is moving to release clutch pressure plate. If it does not move much then you have a bad clutch master cylinder or linkage. If it move more than an inch then you have a bad pressure plate a long as release bearing is pressing it in.

Clutch lost all hydraulic pressure after difficulty engaging gears while using the clutch.
ANSWER : Hello. This situation is usually a failure of either the clutch master or slave cylinder – they simply wear out. If you have any clutch fluid on the drivers side front carpet, the failure is the clutch master cylinder. If the fluid loss is on the ground, under the rear of the engine, the slave cylinder is the failing component. It is often more economical in the long run to replace both with your advanced mileage as they wear at similar rates. I would recommend having the clutch master and slave cylinder replaced by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, to repair this problem.

Loose gearbox that won’t find 2nd or 5th gear, sometimes hard to differentiate between 1st and 3rd.
ANSWER : There are a couple of possibilities. The first thing that comes to mind is of course the shifter itself. There is a nylon ball and socket joint at the base of the gearshift lever that sometimes falls apart, making the feel of the shifter very vague. Additionally, there are links to the transmission shift linkage that involve nylon bushings and joints that can fall apart. Both problems are very common on your car. The other less common possibility is that you have a bad motor mount that is allowing the transmission to move around too much when you try to shift gears. either way, it’s not a big deal to fix, and probably won’t require expensive transmission work. If you contact Your Mechanic, they can send a technician to your home or office to check out you shifting issue and let you know what repairs it will take to correct it.

Was driving manaul transmission 03 vw golf. When I went to shift from 4th to 5th the gear didn’t engage and after wouldn’t engage
ANSWER : When a manual transmission will not engage gears, there a re a few reasons that are possible causes. I’ve owned a few VW’s in my time. The shifter in your Golf is cable-operated. A cable connects the base of the shifter lever to the shifter linkage on the transmission. The linkage or even the cable itself may have broken. That could explain the "looseness" in the shifter lever. You should be able to see the shifter linkage under the hood. Look on the back side of the transmission below the brake master cylinder. Grab a friend. Have one of you observe the linkage while the other moves the shifter lever. If no movement is observed, then it is most likely the shifter cable and/or mechanism. If the linkage is moving, then it could possibly be a clutch failure or failure of the internal shift linkage inside the transmission. I’d be more inclined to think the shifter is at fault however. Have a certified technician look into the shifter feeling loose to find and replace the exact cause.

Was driving manaul transmission 03 vw golf. When I went to shift from 4th to 5th the gear didn’t engage and after wouldn’t engage
ANSWER : Hello. If the vehicle is still moving when in gear and the clutch pedal released then you may have a broken shift fork or a much more serious internal transmission failure. Typically I will check the shift linkage first to see if it is movable. If not then the transmission will need to be taken apart to repair it. You should have a transmission specialist take a look at it.

problem with clutch or transmission or both
ANSWER : It does not sound like you are having an internal transmission failure. It sounds like you have a clutch issue. Most of the time when this occurs the clutch plate either breaks or the pressure plate loses one of its springs. Both will cause this to occur. It can even be binding in the throw out bearing in the clutch. The transmission would need to be removed from the vehicle in order to properly diagnose this. You should have a transmission specialist check it out.
