Whining noise coming from engine.

Monday this week, my Explorer started to make a whining noise in the morning. I would start the car, when i press on the accelerator, the whining noise would get louder. It does not make a noise at idle. As the car warmed up, the noise would stop after 5-10 minutes of driving. Now the noise continues throughout the day. More noticeable on the freeway, again only when acceleration.

I am no mechanic, but I am guessing the alternator, but i've read maybe a fuel or water pump. Any help would be appreciated.

My car has 80000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hi There,
I think you are on the right track in thinking of things like the alternator or the water pump as those are two things that immediately will correspond to RPM change when accelerating. If it is the alternator, try to notice if you voltage gauge fluctuates as this will indicate an alternator that is no longer maintaining a consistent charge and may be close to failing. You may also want to check for leaks around your water pump, particularly around the shaft area, as this is a common place for them to leak and will usually be the center point for the whining noise. This will also of course be accompanied by a change in engine temperature as well if there is coolant leaking. If you need any further help with this, please reach out to us here at YourMechanic as we are always hereto help.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced mechanics :

Low Transmission Fluid: For both manual and automatic transmissions, the primary cause for whining when in gear is low transmission fluid.
Whirring or Whining

Whirring and whining noises from the engine vary as the car runs fast or slow. These sounds can indicate a number of different problems, including a failing water pump, a bad power steering pump, low power steering fluid, a failing alternator, or problems with the air-conditioning system.

Radiator Fan: The radiator fan helps to control the inside temperature of the car and pools cooling air through the radiator. Like normal fans, if the blades get displaced, the fan will begin to make a whirring or vibrating noise. If this is the case, the fan needs to be replaced or the blade needs to be fixed.
A high-pitched squeal when accelerating.

If you notice a loud squeal when accelerating, especially if your car is just warming up, it could be that you have a loose or worn fan belt. Usually if your fan belts are worn, it could mean your timing belt needs to be replaced as well.

Strange Noises

If the sound resembles humming, buzzing, or clunking, you may be experiencing transmission failure. Bad automatic transmissions may emit humming, buzzing, or whining noises while manual transmissions have harsher “clunking” sounds.

Should the whining noise of your transmission continue whenever your vehicle is in gear, this can mean there is a problem occurring in your torque converter. Check to see if the noise desists when you shift the vehicle to park or neutral. A constant whining noise when your car is in gear needs professional attention.
If your car makes a humming noise, it could mean the differential needs lubricant, the transmission is failing or the universal joints or wheel bearings are wearing out. What to do about it: Pay close attention to what happens before and when your car starts making the sound.
Your car`s clutch is going bad. This whining noise that appears at a particular rpm band (mostly early) means that the clutch is slipping.
The drive belt is what drives various components such as the alternator and power steering system. If the drive belt becomes loose, it will produce a loud whining or squealing noise as you drive. Loose drive belts should be tightened as soon as possible.
Weird Noises

There may be trouble if you suddenly notice a whining noise from your torque converter. This whining noise implies that the pump within the torque converter is no longer functioning as designed. The noise could imply that the blade assembly no longer receives enough fluid.

A humming or whining noise in an automatic transmission vehicle often means that you are low on automatic transmission fluid. If this is the case, you want to refill that fluid immediately. Transmission fluid reduces friction, which means heat, which in turn is bad news for transmissions.
Uneven wear is a leading cause of tire noises because contact between the road and uneven tires isn`t uniform. The unbalanced tread depths cause tires to emit loud noises while driving. Usually, you`ll hear sounds caused by uneven wear coming from one tire. Alignment issues can also cause tire noises.

Hello, I have a 2012 jeep compass with engine noise. I inspected it, and it looks to be coming from a pulley. The Crankshaft pulle
ANSWER : There should be no appreciable run-out on the crank pulley and if a physical inspection of the harmonic balancer reveals damage such as a broken, cracked or separated rubber bond, the balancer should be replaced. If you do have a failed balancer, don’t operate the engine because the imbalance and/or torsional forces on the crankshaft can cause damage to the crankshaft and main bearings. You can obtain an inspection/repair quote, and schedule the repair as you like, by simply visiting YourMechanic’s harmonic balancer repair service page and click on "Get a Quote". If you request this service, the responding certified mechanic will first inspect what you have and, if indicated, implement the required repairs and answer any questions that you might have. With regard to the ticking noise, that is almost undoubtedly valve train noise. A certain, minimal level of noise can occur on particular makes and models. Whoever performs the balancer inspection and repair, if required can evaluate that noise up close and let you know if it is normal or not. Turned on back winow heater and engine made a noise …when lights are turned on engine makes a noise like it can’t take load ….
ANSWER : Hi there. It appears you have more than one problem with your vehicle. The noise coming from engine area with a load on the electrical system, may be a bad diode in the alternator. Continuing to drive the vehicle with a bad alternator diode, may leave you with a dead battery. The hot air coming from the vents sounds like blend door actuator(s) problems. I recommend the concerns your vehicle has, it be inspected by a certified technician like one from YourMechanic to pinpoint the noise and help you fix it accordingly.

Check Engine Light comes on after starting pickup
ANSWER : Hello there, thank you for asking about your 1992 Isuzu Pickup. A professional will have the correct equipment to read OBD1 codes. Retrieving the diagnostic trouble code(s) is the first place to start when diagnosing your vehicle. Increasing RPMs changes engine load, which can in turn affect many different sensors and components, causing the Check Engine Light to illuminate. The only way to narrow down the options and find the culprit is through in person diagnosis with an OEM compatible scan tool. A certified technician from YourMechanic can retrieve the OBD codes at your home or office.

Whining noise before starting-key in the ON position but not turning over the engine. 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
ANSWER : Hello – your truck has a secondary air injection pump, which is powered by an electric motor. It is located under the hood, and is power up in the "Run" ignition switch position. I suspect what you are hearing is this pump spinning up. If the noise seems louder than reason would suggest, perhaps the bearings are worn out, and a replacement air pump is in your future. For further diagnosis, I recommend a noise inspection performed by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, and give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs.

ANSWER : Hi there. Although a supercharger sound is great to hear with most Dodge performance engines, this sound on a street car is often an indicator of two different problems. First, it could be a vacuum or exhaust leak or perhaps an issue with the gear drive. In most cases, it’s an exhaust leak, especially with an engine that is nearly 20 years old. I would try to isolate different conditions as to when the noise gets worse in order to correctly diagnose the source of the noise. If not, it might be a good idea to have a professional mechanic come to your location to complete a car is making a noise inspection.

A whining noise starting at 20 m/ph as well as oscillating noise which speeds up and slows down – coming from drivers side.
ANSWER : Hello, thank you for writing in. Due to having the tires replaced recently, you may have a balance issue. Tires are "balanced" in a process where they spin the wheel on a machine and make sure they turn evenly. Any issues are corrected by adding weights to certain parts of the tire. The tires may have been improperly balanced, or may not have been balanced at all. You should start there, and see if the issues is resolved. When they have the wheels off, have a technician check the brakes. Make sure the pads were properly installed and are in place. Between the two inspections and any possible corrections, the issue would go away. If the noises continue, you will want to have the wheel assemblies inspected.

My Toyota is making a noise when I start the engine and bogs the engine down for a second then goes away.
ANSWER : Hi there. A binding accessory could be causing your concern. Simply remove the drive belt and recheck. If the problem goes away, this eliminates the fear that there could be something goin on with the engine or transmission internally. It sounds like this could be the water pump. If the water pump is binding or leaking, it can cause the belt to slip and make it seem like the engine gets bogged down. Usually a visual inspection quickly uncovers the leak. However a properly executed pressure test is the best way to uncover leaks, both current and potential. I suggest having a qualified technician perform an inspection to avoid replacing unnecessary parts. Your Mechanic has several available technicians that can assist you with a car is making a noise inspection.
