Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
The 2010 Maxima uses the ’Nissan Intelligent Key" system. The only way to start the car is to have the key fob in the vehicle while using the start button. There is no way to defeat this requirement as this is part of the engine immobilizer system. If the key fob is lost, one can be procured from a Nissan dealer. If somehow your vehicle was equipped with a transponder chip key (instead of the Intelligent Key system), you must have a transponder chip that is programmed specifically to your vehicle. If you need the assistance of a Mechanic, dispatched by YourMechanic right to your location, please request an electrical component diagnostic and the responding certified mechanic will assist you in obtaining a replacement key fob or transponder key. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced mechanics :

In most cases, the battery is likely either low or dead, but there could be an issue with your Nissan`s remote key functions. If changing the battery doesn`t help, reach out to our service department and we`ll be happy to help.
A bad battery in the key fob is most commonly the reason for a failure to send signals to the keyless entry system. If it is available, use the spare key fob to open the vehicle and start the ignition. If the spare fob is not available, use the provided key embedded in the fob to unlock the door.
This usually happens because of low batteries, but shock can also cause the fob to lose its pairing. Most remotes can be reset, so check your car`s user manual for the resetting sequence. If resetting fails to solve the problem, the fob will need to be reprogrammed.
Reprogram Nissan Key Fob: Nissan Intelligent Key

Insert the key into the ignition, but don`t start the car. Take the key out and repeat this step approximately six times. Keep in mind that it may take up to 10 times to be successful. The hazard lights will flash twice when the car accepts the Nissan Intelligent Key.

No Programming

If you allow a key fob with a battery to go dead, it can lose its initial programming. This is because any key fob must be “paired” to the car it is meant to operate.

If I change the battery in either the car or key fob do I have to reprogram the key fobs? No, The key fobs use non-volatile memory, meaning that they will never lose their programming if power to either the key fob itself or the module is lost.
The critical fobs in many Nissans are user-programmable, which means you can program them yourself to lock and unlock your car doors. You can also program it to turn on your car`s engine by pressing the “Start” button. You do not need to take your vehicle to the dealer or an auto locksmith for programming to occur.
If your key fob isn`t working after replacing the batteries, you may need to reprogram it or check for loose buttons and broken battery terminals. If your remote key fob isn`t working and you`ve already replaced the battery, you may need to reprogram the key.
If the vehicle is equipped with a keyless entry and start system, then yes. You should still be able to start the car without the piece of metal they give you in the key fob to use as a key when the system fails. If your vehicle is not equipped with a push to start system, then no.
Run the keyboard troubleshooter

Click Start and then Settings, followed by Update & Security. (If you have Windows 11, click Settings, then System.) Next, click Troubleshoot, and choose Other troubleshooters or Additional troubleshooters. Scroll down to Keyboard and run this troubleshooter.

You could reprogram a key fob to a different vehicle as long as the key is the same for the vehicle. In this case, if the key can go into the doors and unlock them, then you would need to do the following: Remove the battery from the key fob and put it back in (unless you put in a new battery)
Press and hold any button from your fob`s keychain until the door locks begin to flash. It should take about three seconds. Once you stop seeing the lock lights flash, you can release your programming button. You should then see a steady light that confirms that the key fob has been programmed.

A simple solution to getting the ignition key to turn may be as easy as checking the gear shift. In automatic cars, the ignition key won`t turn in the lock if it`s not parked or in neutral. Gently move the gear shift from side to side to check its fully in position, before trying to turn the key.

Car cranks but won’t start
ANSWER : Hi there. It sounds like the spare key isn’t being recognized by the immobilizer system. The method you stated that you performed sounded like the procedure to manually program the wireless fob portion to lock and unlock the doors. If the key isn’t programmed or the immobilizer system has lost the registration, then it will need to be completed and this usually has to be completed by the dealer. Unfortunately, Your Mechanic does not offer key programming services. Your Mechanic does have available technicians that come to your home or office to perform requested services, inspections, and repairs. Battery and oil light come on when trying to start car, take keys out try again car starts no problem and lights go away
ANSWER : Of course, don’t switch gears without being fully stopped, unless your Owner’s Manual or the manufacturer has alternative advice. However, the gear shift issue has no relation to the no-start problem you are describing. Inasmuch as you only have 6,000 miles on the car, the "constant on and off" that you believe has occurred is meaningless in comparison to the expected total vehicle service life. That is, assume what you perceive as "constant on and off", during merely 6,000 miles, might be equivalent to using the car "normally" for three years. A new car should be trouble free for at least 5 years, unless there is a defect, so your "constant on and off" is not a causal factor for any fault on the vehicle. What you might have is a defect in the ignition switch, or perhaps the immobilizer system, but if the problem is not in the switch itself, clearly there is an electrical problem.

If your vehicle is under warranty, by law the dealer MUST repair the issue you are describing within a prescribed time frame and number of "attempts", otherwise the dealer will run afoul of Federal and state Lemon Laws that give you very specific rights, and recourse (contact an Attorney; we are Mechanics, NOT attorneys). Consequently, if the vehicle is still under warranty, to save yourself money do be sure to seek a resolution from the dealer. If the vehicle is not under warranty, obviously a certified Mechanic from YourMechanic could identify the electrical fault and resolve this for you. If you want to go that route, please simply request a no start diagnostic -electrical system and the responding certified mechanic will get this taken care of for you. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.

If car keys are inserted in car for 1 day does battery dead?
ANSWER : When the keys are inserted into the ignition, this completes the ignition circuit and actually supplies power to certain systems. If you are still having trouble after charging the battery, a certified professional from YourMechanic can come to your home or office to inspect the starting problem.

After unlocking the car from the drivers side, if the passenger door is opened before the key is put in the car the alarm goes off.
ANSWER : The key should only unlock the driver door with one turn and unlock all of the doors with two turns. If the passenger door is unlocking when the driver door is turned with one turn or if the alarm is still set if the driver door is turned two times, then the Immobilizer System Module needs replaced if you are intending on not using a key fob or you will need to get a key fob to manually turn off the Immobilizer System Module. If you need further assistance with your doors unlocking unusual, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.

Am I able to ask to keep the amount of money the insurance is going to pay to fix my totaled car to fix myself?
ANSWER : Hi there. In general, when the insurance company considers the vehicle a ’total loss’, they will send you the settlement amount, minus the deductible. However, every insurance company is different and unique in regards to their own regulations and policies. I would highly recommend calling your insurance company and clarify what they are willing to do to settle your claim.

My car has issues going up steep hills and the car shudders. Does replacing the transmission fix that?
ANSWER : This may be a sign of a dirty or [failing mass air flow sensor] https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/mass-airflow-sensor-replacement. The mass air flow sensor is a unit in the intake system that monitors air intake as it is mixed with fuel prior to being injected into the motor. When this fails, this can cause an imbalanced air/fuel load to be supplied to the motor which often times results in the engine starving for air or fuel. This is what causes the hesitation or loss of power you describe. This can also cause the engine to struggle to idle for the same reason. This may also be a failing transmission control module or failing speed sensors.

The transmission control module (TCM) helps regulate fuel efficiency and power while storing information about the transmission system in its memory. A faulty transmission control module, may cause the car not to increase its speed even when pressing the gas pedal and may respond poorly when you shift the gear into drive. The transmission control module has various sensors such as vehicle speed sensors, wheel speed sensors, throttle position sensors, turbine speed sensor, and transmission fluid temperature sensors that all direct information to it in order for it to perform it’s function. Other components controlled by the the TCM include a kick down switch, traction control system, and cruise control module. Any of these may also affect the way the transmission control module performs and controls the transmission and the shifting of your car. I would suggest having a professional, such as one from YourMechanic, come to your location to properly diagnose your transmission.
