Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hello, thank you for writing in. The shields that are mounted on the bottom of the car provide the most protection from water and road debris. While they do provide this protection, failure of the rack and pinion should not have occurred after being exposed for 5 months. If weather conditions in your area are extreme right now, that may be a factor to consider, but you need to look into the situation a little further. Check to see if the rack was new, used, or re-manufactured when it was put in. Verify what kind of warranty the unit came with if any, and find out why the heat shield was not reinstalled. The company will have to take some responsibility for that. If the unit was used, it may not have a warranty, but any new or re-manufactured parts (used but rebuilt) should have a warranty. Between the manufacture of the rack, and the shop who did not reinstall the shield, you should be getting assistance somewhere along the line in replacing the unit again. BMW Steering Rack Knock Fix

We can now repair these steering racks fitted to all BMW F20 (1 & 2-series) and F30 (3 & 4-series) vehicles. The symptom: A metallic `clunk` or `knock` from the right hand side of the car when going over potholes, uneven road surfaces or sunken drain covers.

Turn One`s rack and pinion rebuilding service is the most comprehensive rebuilding service available. All our rack services include a careful disassembly, component inspection, cleaning, service, and reassembly of racks including a new seal kit.
Your rack and pinion (also known as the steering rack) should be covered by your extended warranty as long as you don`t have powertrain coverage, which doesn`t cover steering components. All 25 providers we reviewed have at least 1 plan which covers your rack and pinion.
You can still drive your car although it will require a lot more effort. However, it can become dangerous depending on how severe it is and how strong you are. But either way, you should get it fixed as soon as possible. Whilst driving on the road, try to feel if your car is responding to your steering wheel.
A worn steering rack can cause you to lose partial or complete control over your car steering wheel, which can lead to fatal accident. That goes without saying that steering rack is a major car maintenance procedure and is expensive.
Restore A Dry and Cracked Steering Wheel

You can restore these by using leather conditioner products, filler putties and a good lick of dye and clear coat.

It is possible to rebuild the seals on a steering rack, but the process is lengthy and the deeper internal seals are more difficult to change without special tools. Replacement is typically the most cost effective solution.
Steering racks develop leaks most commonly at the place where they attach to the tie rods. Although this connection point contains a fluid-proof seal, temperature swings, debris damage, and chemical exposure often cause the seal to fail.
The typical lifespan of a steering rack is around 80,000 miles. However, this can vary depending on a few factors such as the type of vehicle and how it is driven. Off-road driving can cause the steering rack to be overloaded and prematurely fail.
Common signs include a very tight steering wheel, leaking power steering fluid, grinding noises when steering, and a burning oil smell.
A steering wheel that is hard to turn, or very tight could be a sign that you`re having problems with your rack and pinion. If your gearbox builds up heat, or loses hydraulic pressure from lack of steering fluid, this can be another indicator.
How often does a steering rack need to be replaced? Eventually, a rack and pinion system will fail from everyday use, but these components are engineered for long-term operation. It will be unusual to have to replace the steering rack before 100,000 miles.
When your tie rods go bad, the symptom you`re most likely to experience first is a vibration or shaking sensation in your steering wheel. You may also hear associated clunking and rattling noises, especially when turning the vehicle at low speeds. These sounds are caused by tie rods that are starting to wear out.
Labor costs are estimated between $356 and $449 while parts are priced between $3,105 and $3,193.
The average cost for a BMW 328i Power Steering Pump Replacement is between $735 and $1,409. Labor costs are estimated between $249 and $314 while parts are priced between $486 and $1,095.
It depends on the failure. If the internal seals failed and it is leaking out the ends of the rack, replace it, if it`s just the external hard lines that corroded and failed, then get those re-made at a hydraulics shop and put it back together.

My heat in my car stopped working two days ago and now my car is overheating. I put antifreeze in my car and it’s still overheating 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix
ANSWER : Hi there – you may have 2 related events here, a coolant leak, and a problem with the heater system. The current issue may be air inside the cooling system, which can cause overheating, and a lack of heater function. The lack of heater function could have 5 causes: the engine is not getting up to correct temperature (center of the gauge) due to a malfunctioning thermostat, the heater control valve is not letting hot coolant into the heater core, there is a restriction in the heater system that is preventing adequate hot coolant flow through the heater core, the heater fan is not working to transfer heat from the heater core to warm air for the passenger compartment, or the air blend doors inside the heater are not working properly to route warm air to the desired vents. I would recommend a heater system inspection](https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/heater-is-not-working-inspection) by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs.

I put the wrong key in my car and a few weeks later my car just shut down and it will not start I believe it’s the computer but…
ANSWER : Hi there. What had happened is the wrong key set the security to the vehicle. This is to prevent the vehicle from starting with the wrong keys. Try removing the battery cables (+) and (-) for 13 minutes. During that time, put the original key in the ignition and turn it on. Activate everything in the car even though there is no power. Then remove the key and hook up the battery cables. The computer should have reset and reset the security. If the security is still being tripped, then I recommend seeking out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you

A/C and heat are not working properly. Car blows heat in summer and cool air in winter.
ANSWER : Common causes of no cabin heat include malfunctioning blend door(s) (part of the in-dash ventilation network), a faulty or stuck heater control valve, a plugged heater core, stuck open engine cooling thermostat, collapsed hoses, and low coolant level. The cost to resolve the problem depends on which of the foregoing faults is the cause. If you desire a diagnostic to determine exactly why there is no cabin heat, please request a non functioning cabin heater diagnostic and the responding mechanic will come right to your location and get this resolved for you promptly.

With regard to your air conditioning system, if merely re-charging the system restored normal operation but the a/c ceased to function after a month or so, that scenario typically suggests a leak. Some leaks are really cheap to repair, like if a couple o-rings need to be replaced in system piping but if the leak is at the compressor shaft seal, that repair is more costly. It is not expensive to find the leak and diagnose the system and once the leak is found the mechanic can let you know of the exact cost to repair the leak and re-charge the system. If you desire that service please request an a/c system diagnostic – suspected refrigerant leak and the responding certified mechanic will get this taken care of for you. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you

Can you replace just the hydraulic line in steering rack or does the entire rack have to be replaced?
ANSWER : The individual lines can be replaced but that is only worthwhile if there are no other faults with the rack. Also, inasmuch as the rack will probably have to be removed from the vehicle to replace an individual line, there is the related risk that you go to all that trouble, and expense, only to find other issues with the rack once it is re-installed in the car. But, again, to answer your principal question, the individual tubes can absolutely be replaced and they can even be fabricated right in the field. If you desire an inspection and advice as to the least cost and most effective repair strategy for this issue, please schedule a leak diagnostic and the responding certified mechanic will explain your options and ultimately get this resolved for you. If you have further questions or concerns as you decide what to do, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic because we want you to make the most of your repair dollars and help you to get the best possible results.

Car won’t drive after over heating on the highway
ANSWER : Hi there. Most of the time when you overheat this engine it will also cause the transmission to get too hot. When this occurs it can easily cause transmission failure. I would suspect this if the vehicle does not move at all. If it move but is severely lacking power then you either have some serious internal engine damage or a failure in the catalytic converter from the overheating. It sounds like it is the transmission though. I would recommend having a transmission specialist take a look at it.

Is it common to have such play in steering rack?
ANSWER : Hello. It is common to have very little play in the rack, but it should not be much. If there is some noise coming from the rack, then it needs to be replaced. The rack you have was more than likely a rebuild as it is not common to get brand new ones anywhere but the dealer and they are very expensive. I would definitely take is back out and have it warrantied at the place you purchased it from. If you would like to to have this taken care of by someone else, a qualified professional from YourMechanic can come to your car’s location to inspect the suspension and steering and advise on repairs.

car is overheating and leaking water and anti freeze
ANSWER : Coolant leaks can occur because of cracked hoses, leaking gaskets, faulty water pumps, or damaged radiators. When the coolant level goes low, the engine will start to overheat due to the low coolant level. I would first recommend giving the cooling system a visual look over. If it is not obvious where the coolant leak is coming from, I would recommed having the cooling system pressure tested in order to determine the leak source. If you would like to have your cooling system pressure testedcoolant is leaking inspection, consider YourMechanic, as a certified technician can come to your home or office to inspect your cooling system.
