Fuel pump not pumping gas. 1996 Chevrolet Blazer

I had a leak in the fuel tank of my Blazer. I decided to install a new tank because I was tired of smelling gas all the time. Since I was putting a new tank in I figured I would also change out the fuel pump. I ordered a combo tank/pump. The pump being already installed in the tank. I had to wire in a new harness for the new pump. Once I got it all installed I tried to start the car, but it still would not start. I check all the connections again and still got nothing. I could hear the fuel pump turn on, but the car wouldn't start. Thinking maybe I received a faulty fuel pump, I warranty e

Hey there, thanks for writing in about your 1996 Chevrolet Blazer. If you hear the pump, but still get no fuel out of the pump, then you have the power and ground backwards in the wiring or they have it backwards on the pump. If you need help having this checked, a certified professional from YourMechanic can inspect the starting issue and let you know what repairs are necessary.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced mechanics :

The most common cause of fuel pump failure is frequently running the tank low on fuel, which causes the motor to overheat. The second most common cause is fuel contamination, usually dirt and rust particles that clog the fuel strainer and prevent the pump from drawing enough fuel under high engine load.
These include a bad fuel pump relay or control module, a blown fuse, a wiring fault, loose or corroded wiring connector at the pump, or even an issue with the anti-theft system. Until these other possibilities have been checked out and eliminated, the fuel pump should be the last thing that`s replaced.
A blocked fuel filter is the primary reason for pump failure. And the new pump will only be covered under warranty if the filters can be shown to have been replaced along with the pump. Check the fuel flow to the injectors – it will operate for about five seconds without cranking the engine to start.
Fuel pressure should be 56 to 63 lbs.
A faulty fuel rail sensor may send an inaccurate signal to the computer which may cause the engine to experience hard starting. The engine may take a few cranks longer than normal to start and in more serious cases may not start at all.
The mass air flow sensor (MAF) is used to measure the flow rate of air entering a fuel injected engine. The PCM uses air mass information to calculate and deliver the correct amount of fuel to the cylinders under all engine operating conditions.
Irregular resistance within the fuel pump motor can lead to your car slowing down and being unable to accelerate. Failing to accelerate is a good sign that your vehicle`s fuel pump needs inspection.
The Fuel injection in the Silverado needs 55-65psi.
The TBI can run a wide range of fuel pressures, from 0.5 to 6.0 psi, even be gravity fed. The TBI is not attitude sensitive as it has no float chamber and so consequently is fully aerobatic.
your car fails to start: the engine`s computer uses the map sensor to gauge atmospheric pressure before the engine is started. a false reading could cause too much or too little fuel to be delivered to the engine. both conditions could keep it from firing up.
If the fuel rail sensor is bad, then the correct fuel pressure may not be achieved, resulting in the absence of sufficient fuel required for starting up. You may find that the engine cranks and maybe even fire up a couple of times before immediately dying.

Just replaced my fuel pump but its not getting any power tested fuel pump relay and fuel fuse both good tested the wires all good.
ANSWER : You need to look at the theft light on dash to make sure it comes on and goes off when you turn the key to the on position. If light comes on and stays on then your theft system is causing the fuel pump to not be engaged. I recommend you check the theft system and then scan the computer for theft system codes. You may need to reprogram the keys to work or you have an bad sensor for the ignition key in the steering column.

Replaced fuel pump. Car won’t start. 2002 Infinity I35
ANSWER : Hi there – the metal component you describe is a fuel check valve on the fuel return line. Its function is to maintain a small amount of pressure in the fuel system so that starting does not require the fuel pump to run very long before the engine will start. Having replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter, I would check fuel pressure while the car is running. This is to check the fuel pump relay for burned contacts that won’t support full electrical current to the pump, and for proper fuel pressure – a malfunctioning fuel pressure regulator could also restrict power and higher speeds if pressure is too low. I would recommend an inspection of the fuel system by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs.

I have a truck that won’t run and is not getting gas to the engine. Fuel pump is running, have a new filter and new fuel pressure
ANSWER : Hi There,
It sounds like you may have a clogged fuel injector or potentially a faulty injector that is fried internally. I would suggest testing them if you have access to a multi meter. Disconnect the injector from the electrical connector and set your multi meter to Ohms mode and measure the resistance of the injector. After testing all injectors, compare the resistance. They should be the same or very close. If they are not, they will likely need to be replaced.

Installed new delphi fuel pump and fram fuel filter. still no pressure on fuel rail valve and wont start. 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe
ANSWER : Hi there – I suspect you have weak power getting to the fuel pump. I would first check the voltage coming out of the fuel pump relay. If the contacts in the relay are burned, you will not get reliable current flow to the pump. Check the fuel pump ground as well (voltage drop across the ground, not just continuity). I recommend a fuel system inspection performed by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs.

Engine crank, no coil spark, fuel pump does not kick in.
ANSWER : Hi there. There could be multiple issues causing your lack of spark problem, ranging from a minor electrical short in the main relay to an issue with your ECU. In order to know for sure, you should have a professional mobile mechanic complete an electrical problems inspection.

I have a 1981 e-350 with dual fuel tanks the p.o. added a third tank and 3 electric fuel pumps along with sepparate gauges and swi
ANSWER : The switch you are referring to is vended with the required electrical and fuel schematic (I just looked in the box) that answers your installation question. If you want an advance view, here is a link as well. Yes, you need a return line and just refer to the aforementioned link. If you are retrofitting back to OEM, I strongly encourage you to buy the original Factory Service Manual (FSM). There are lots of details attending this system and obviously it is difficult to recount it all here. The FSM will make your life much easier and you can then make sure your installation is perfect. Alternatively, YourMechanic can dispatch a certified mechanic and perform the whole retrofit and check out if you desire. Just request and schedule a generic service such as fuel pump service and the mechanic will come to your location and estimate the parts and labor required. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.

I had my key on and I pulled off the fuel line at the fuel pump gas came out got on the power plug now can’t hear the fuel pump w
ANSWER : Hello, thank you for writing in. The fuel pump likely has been shorted out due to the moisture. At this point you will need to replace the fuel pump, and possibly the fuel pump fuse/relay. With that being said, you can do some further electrical testing on the system to see how much damage was done. A surge in the system can cause failure across the circuit, however it usually stops at the fuse or relay. This is one of the safety features that the fuse is designed to help with. With a fuse to blow, more electrical components may be effected by the surge. The required testing can all be done at home with a voltmeter if equipped. If not equipped, you will want to seek professional assistance. Contact our service department if you find yourself in need of help.
