Adding cruise control on a factory non equipped car.

I have a 2010 mazda3 I sport. My car did not come with cruise control. I went the junkyard and got the controls for cruise and installed them. My brakelight switch has 4 wires going to it wich signifies it is 4 pronged. I read from oreilys that a 4 prong has cruise control abilities. I also performed a Guage self diagnostic and it showed a cruise control light. So, I have the light, the switches, and I think, the right brakelight switch. The dealer wants to charge me $110 to "see" if my ecm has cruise control capabilities and to turn it on if it does. I talked to a couple of differe

The unfortunate truth is the dealer is correct. What you are doing is in theory feasible but not common at all. I haven’t run across anyone who has done what you are doing and I have often wondered how such an endeavor might work. My point here is, I am not surprised the dealer isn’t sure because it’s likely they have never done this themselves. The dealer doesn’t set up the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) in the cars they sell. The manufacturer does and guessing what happened when a car is being built is not common knowledge.

Anytime you modify any car, there are always details such as this that you will possibly have to address. When you choose to modify a car, you are now the engineer. The simple answer is that I can’t tell you with certainty whether or not the PCM in your car has cruise control capability. The only way to find out is to allow the dealer to check in out. Independent shops might possibly be able to, but the equipment they have is aftermarket and not produced by Mazda. The electronic equipment the dealer has is. The dealer equipment will most likely be able to do what you need.

What Features Does It Have? The Mazda3 Neo sits at the bottom of the range, yet includes a trip computer and cruise control with steering wheel mounted controls as standard.
Can you install cruise control in a car? Well, the answer is yes as well as no. There are aftermarket cruise control kits available for old cars that don`t rely on an ECU to control the engine. However, the system doesn`t work as smoothly as it does on modern cars that come factory-fitted with it.
While it`s possible to install a cruise control system by yourself, ensure you have the knowledge and tools to do so. Otherwise, it can be installed professionally for $100 to $250. In total, you`re looking at anywhere from $200 to $600 depending on the system you purchase and the installation cost.
Cruise control can help you become more fuel-efficient and can help you save an average of 7-14% on gas thanks to its ability to maintain a continuous speed.
The actuator itself is controlled by the vehicle`s ECU (engine control unit), which monitors the speed you have programmed and the speed of the vehicle from wheel sensors. Say you set the cruise control to 70 mph.
The PCM controls ignition timing, fuel delivery, valve timing in engines with Variable Valve Timing), emissions functions, turbo boost pressure in turbocharged engines, idle speed, throttle position and cruise control.
The cruise control is set at the moment the SET switch is pressed. Release the accelerator pedal simultaneously.
Reliability 5/10 – We recommend avoiding the 2010 model due to poor reliability and going with something from 2006–2009 or 2011–2020 which are all better choices. Performance 7/10 – Power is average from the standard 4-cylinder engine, but the turbocharged motor is stronger than other compact cars.

Having intermittent problems with cruise control on my car
ANSWER : Hello. This can be caused by a number of different issues. Most of the time this is caused by a bad brake switch. If the switch is shorting out, then it will cause the computer to think that the brakes are being applied, which turns off the cruise control. If the switch is fine, then it may have a bad speed sensor or the cruise control switch itself is bad.

One of the easiest tests I do is simply have someone drive behind me and see if the brake lights are coming on without touching the pedal. If it is, then you should replace the switch. If not, then further testing of the circuit has to be done. If you need to have this done, consider YourMechanic, as a certified mechanic can come to your home or office to diagnose your cruise control problem.

Oil leaking from under car and "remote control car" sound when car is first started for a few minutes until it warm up.
ANSWER : Hello,
There are a number of things that could make an engine noisy when starting up. Depending on the specific type of sound you are referring to, this will determine how to properly diagnose. If there is a bit of a hissing sound, this may be a sign of a vacuum leak. If this is more of a shrieking sound, this may be a sign of a worn out or out of adjustment serpentine belt. If there is a bit of a howling or growling sound, this may be a sign of a worn out or low on fluid power steering pump. A rattling or pinging sound may be caused by an ignition problem. An engine can ping (or knock) due to an improper combustion process. A "spark knock" is the result of combustion occurring too early. Early combustion can occur from carbon buildup inside the combustion chamber, a lean air/fuel mixture, and advanced ignition timing (spark plug firing too soon). A clattering type sound may be a result of improper lubrication in the valve train which could be a more serious problem and should be addressed as soon as possible. I would suggest having an expert from YourMechanic come to your location to diagnose and inspect your vehicle to ensure everything is in proper working order.

ANSWER : Hi there. What had happened is the wrong key set the security to the vehicle. This is to prevent the vehicle from starting with the wrong keys. Try removing the battery cables (+) and (-) for 13 minutes. During that time, put the original key in the ignition and turn it on. Activate everything in the car even though there is no power. Then remove the key and hook up the battery cables. The computer should have reset and reset the security. If the security is still being tripped, then I recommend seeking out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you

Replaced alternator on car 2 times each time shows it’s charging 14v let car run for a little bit then test drive and car voltage
ANSWER : There are reports that the replacement alternators will not communicate with the engine computer and will not charge correctly. I recommend using only the manufacturer approved replacement part. It can be new or remanufactured but approved for use in the vehicle. Some lower cost alternators on the aftermarket will have charging problems since they will not communicate with the ECM on the vehicle and will stop charging.

My car overheated while on the highway. I added coolant and let the engine rest and cool down. Now the car will not start. How can
ANSWER : Hi there:

Unfortunately, there is no exact reason we can offer to you as to why the vehicle won’t start now after your overheating issue; without first inspecting the vehicle. However, if the vehicle overheated on the highway there is a high possibility that major engine damage has occurred, which is possibly why the vehicle won’t start now. This damage could include head gaskets being blown, which can cause coolant to enter the internal portions of the engine and lead to additional damage. The best thing for you to do is have your vehicle towed back home, then contact YourMechanic.com to have one of our professional mechanics complete a car is overheating inspection.

My car will not start Intermittently. I purchased a new battery 2 weeks ago and yesterday the car wouldn’t start. Got a jump and
ANSWER : The issue you are having is probably due to an intermittent fault in the starter motor itself or a deficiency in the starter electrical circuit, for example a large voltage drop due to a poor ground or a high resistance connection. These issues can be readily diagnosed and resolved on a mobile basis if you request a hard starting diagnostic. If you request that diagnostic, the responding certified mechanic will get this resolved for you promptly. Based on Toyota’s Factory Service Manual, the battery should not be disconnected if the vehicle engine is running. The battery acts as a large resistive voltage sink and consequently taking the battery out of the circuit, while the alternator is still running, can create a voltage spike on the car’s electrical system which is not good for voltage sensitive components such as the engine computer. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.

Cruise control turned on, sudden acceleration, high revving
ANSWER : Hey there. This could be from a defective cruise control switch shorted or a problem with the throttle control actuator. The vehicle should be towed to the dealer and left there until they verify and repair the problem. The dealer will not repair something unless they can duplicate the problem. Without duplicating the issue it cannot be diagnosed. Check to make sure your floor covers are secure away from the pedal. If you would like to have an outside expert give the car a second opinion, a qualified professional from YourMechanic can come to your car’s location to inspect the acceleration, cruise control, and vibration issues.
