2010 Ford Fusion Sport. Went to start it up and it started clicked and refused. After I got a message saying check braking system. The car will not start. I am trying to figure out if there is something wrong with the brakes, battery, or alternator before I head to the shop. Have you had this issue in the past?

My car has 128000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Yes, this is not an unusual issue and may stem from something as simple as a faulty (discharged) battery. Prior to performing diagnostics the battery should be load tested. With a battery that passes a load test and the engine immobilizer (security) system off, if the starter motor does not operate at that point, there are only two possibilities: 1) either there is no power to the starter motor/solenoid, or an excessive voltage drop, hence the entire starter circuit would have to be diagnosed; or 2) there is power but the starter/solenoid itself is bad and that includes intermittent operation which does happen. If you desire that a specialist from YourMechanic determine which of these is the issue, and get it resolved right at your location on a mobile basis (no need to travel anywhere), please request a no start diagnostic. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced mechanics :

The most likely issue is that your brakes need service (fluid filled, brake pads replaced, etc.), but it may also mean that there`s a malfunction somewhere in the system. If the message does not clear, or comes back again, have your car inspected as soon as possible. Take all Brake system warnings seriously.
The brake warning light is very serious. When you see it come on, check to make sure your emergency brake is off, then stop driving as soon as you get the chance. If you are running low on brake fluid, your brakes may stop working altogether.
This message indicates the vehicle`s parking brake is not working as intended. If you park your car on a hill or incline, the emergency brake can malfunction, and there is a risk that your vehicle will roll away.
Press and hold the accelerator pedal and place the EPB switch to the RELEASE (downward) position. Continue to hold the accelerator pedal and EPB. Set the ignition to OFF, then set the ignition to ON within 5 seconds.
Faulty sensors can keep your engine from starting, but this is often engineered in as a safety measure.
The symbol is a circle containing an exclamation mark, and the circle is surrounded on each side by what look like rounded brackets. In some vehicles, there may even be the word `brake` under or next to this.
The most common cause of failure is a leak in the brake lines. The brake fluid will slowly drain out, until there isn`t enough left to transmit the pressure from the pedal to the tires. The brakes can also fail when the discs or drums wear out, so they can no longer put enough friction on the wheels to stop them.
Answer: A parking brake, also called an emergency brake or e-brake, is a mechanical hand lever or foot-operated brake that is a backup braking system. It is located either between the front two seats or to the left of your gas and brake pedal.
Electronic handbrakes are pretty simple, so there`s not too much to go wrong. They`re inevitably more complex than a manual handbrake, however failures are rare.
If you need to shut it off, you can do so by pressing the brake pedal then the gas pedal and holding them both down for 15 seconds. In most vehicles, there won`t be any indication that this has turned the brake override system off.
BRAKE WARNING LIGHT = BRAKE SYSTEM PROBLEM

Any brake system problem has to be regarded as a major safety issue and your car should not be driven until the problem has been resolved by a mechanic.

The most common cause of brake failure is loss of brake fluid. The fluid transfers the force you exert by pushing down on the brake pedal to the brake disks that slow and stop your car`s wheels. You can usually detect a leak before getting on the road because you`ll see it underneath your vehicle.

My 2003 ford explorer wont start up just get click click click click click click click click
ANSWER : If the battery is weak and the voltage is dropping to below 9 volts you will get the clicking without the starter turning the motor. Have the battery voltage checked and if battery cannot hold a load then replace it and clean the battery terminals and recheck system to see if it starts.

Fuel pump engages. Batery good, alternator good volts, jump start helps when wont start. Temp does not matter. Intermittent?
ANSWER : Hello. Thank you for writing in. There are several reasons your vehicle may only start when jump starting. The first and most common is a build up of resistance that is causing you to need a boost of voltage to get the engine started. This may be due to poor battery cables, a bad ground connection, a poor starter solenoid, and a couple of other issues. The first thing you want to do is perform a visual inspection of the starting system. Make sure there is no corrosion build up in the battery cables. You can also check the resistance across these wires and make sure you have a solid connection between components. You then want to make sure the starter solenoid is doing its job. It is responsible for taking the small amount of electricity sent by the ignition and turning it into a huge electrical charge that is strong enough to push over the engine with the help of some gear ratios in its favor. Do some more testing, and stick to the basics before assuming its something seriously complicated.

Car does not start sometimes. says brake system in the top left of the HUD.
ANSWER : Hello there, the brake warning is a safety feature on your 2010 Ford Fusion hybrid indicating there is something wrong. Though the fault goes away after a few key cycles when it keeps coming back this indicates that the car detects a fault still, preventing the vehicle from starting is a failsafe mode.

If the brake check indicator is on than the car should be scanned by a technician to see what codes are stored in the brake computer. To avoid any unnecessary repairs, a qualified technician such as one from YourMechanic will be able to diagnose your brake warning light and make any repairs required to resolve the issue.

EPC light on 2004 Jetta. Code said brake switch faulty, but brakes lights worked. Replaced brake switch, now no brake lights.
ANSWER : Hi there. The first thing that pops in my mind beyond of what you have listed is perhaps the electrical harness attached to the brake switch. Perhaps the harness itself is damaged or you have an exposed wire, loose ground wire somewhere. You might want to have a professional mobile mechanic come to your location and complete a brake lights not working inspection to help you diagnose this issue.

ABS Brakes VSC
ANSWER : That is a code for the yaw rate sensor. It may be able to be cleared after a zero point calibration is carried out on the yaw rate sensor with a scan tool capable of resetting the yaw rate sensor. If the sensor will not calibrate, then it will likely need to be replaced. You may want to enlist the help of a mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will have the equipment and training to inspect your brakes, steering, and suspension in order to properly diagnose and resolve this issue.

I have a 2012 ford fusion sel that says park brakes engaged. But I never lifted the park brakes
ANSWER : Hi there. Is the parking brake engaged? Does the vehicle move freely if the parking brake is disengaged? If the vehicle moves freely with the parking brake off and the warning continues then it sounds like there could be a fault in the parking brake switch circuit. This could be a fault with the switch itself, internally or physically, or a wire harness concern. Short of acquiring a digital volt ohm meter (digital meter) and disassembling your console where the parking brake handle is located, an appropriate scan tool may show you data for the switch to see if it is sending an on/off signal and may assist with diagnosis. The switch either provides a ground when engaged or no ground when not engaged; engaged will turn on the parking brake warning. I suggest having a qualified technician perform an inspection to avoid replacing unnecessary parts.

Low brake pedal and anti-lock brakes are not kicking in.
ANSWER : The brake pedal is working to stop the vehicle, but there may be air in the controller unit causing the ABS brakes to not function. I recommend bleeding the brake system from the farthest location from the master cylinder to the master cylinder including the ABS unit. If the brakes are still spongy after a full bleed, then the controller will need to be replaced. If you need further assistance with your brake pedal being spongy, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.
