The wind shield wipers on my 1999 Toyota Camry went out. They worked off and on for awhile until they completely stopped working. I wanted to know the best way to go about getting it fixed or replacing it myself.
My car has an automatic transmission.
Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hi there. Sounds like either the wiper motor or wiper motor relay has gone bad. First check to see if a fuse is blown. If the fuse is blown replace it and recheck the system. If not, then check the relay to the wiper motor. Replace the relay with another relay and see if the wiper system works. If the system still don’t work, then the wiper motor has seized up and needs replaced. If you need further assistance with your wiper not working issue, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

If your wiper motor runs but the wipers don`t move it`s most likely a mechanical problem, so you should start by examining the wiper assembly. This might be a disconnected wiper motor link arm, a jammed transmission, or locked gear.
There are a number of reasons why windscreen wipers stop working and these include: torn wipers, broken controls, a blown fuse, faults with the motor, damaged arms, snow or ice covering, loose pivot nuts and a break in the wires.
A relay is a small electric switch mechanism that turns the wiper motor on and off. You can usually find it under the hood, in the fusebox, near other relays. Sometimes a wiper relay can get stuck in the “on” position. This means the relay has failed, and is causing the wipers to continue working even when turned off.
Clear Clogged Windshield Washer Nozzles

Clear the clogged windshield washer nozzle with a pin, then use compressed air to blow the debris backward through the hose. If you hear the pump going but don`t get fluid, you probably have clogged windshield washer nozzles.

Before the wiper motor goes bad, you will probably experience a blown wiper fuse, which is intentional. The fuse is designed to be the circuits weak spot, which protects the wiper motor. Essentially, if your vehicle`s wiper motor is being overloaded, the fuse will blow to ensure the motor does not become damaged.
Common signs include wiper blades rotating out of sequence, sputtering while operating, not moving at all, and making a grinding noise.
The relay switch sends an electrical signal to the module that controls the operation of the wiper motor and gears inside. When the relay is faulty, the windshield wipers will only work at the same speed that the last relay signal was sent.
The wiper motor is the engine behind the operation of windscreen wipers. It provides the torque to move them, ensuring a clean windshield. The motor is located in a convenient place that allows it to work the wiper mechanism.

Windshield wipers stopped working. They’ll suddenly stop working then suddenly start working again. Has been happening for a week.
ANSWER : The problem you are describing likely stems from an intermittent electrical fault in the wiper circuit. The windshield wiper system uses a small electric motor to move the wiper arms that you see on the windshield. That electric motor is controlled through a switch, relay, fuse, and wiring. One, or more, of those electrical components has failed although it is also possible that the mechanical arms are binding (seized, if the lubricant has dried out) thus causing the electric circuit to the motor to overload. Regardless of the underlying fault, if you request a non functioning wiper diagnostic/repair, the responding certified mechanic will get this taken care of for you. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.

My wind shield wipers wont work but i hear the motor but the wipers wont move
ANSWER : You can try to use a heat gun (REALLY carefully though, unless you intend to scrap your car) to melt any ice on the linkages to ensure that the linkages are not mechanically binding anywhere (due to ice; they can, of course, bind due to other causes). Of course, if it’s REALLY cold out, even that strategy is going to be problematic because whatever you unfreeze could instantly re-freeze. You just have to judge your circumstances or put the car in a warm garage for a short while. Heat gun or no heat gun, if you judge that there are no mechanical blockages, and you can SEE the motor turning, and yet the wipers aren’t moving, you could have stripped (broken) linkages.
If you cannot see what the motor is doing, the noise you are hearing could be the "humming" of a stuck motor, as opposed to an actually functioning motor. If you desire that the issue be diagnosed and the root cause(s) repaired simply request a non working wiper diagnostic and a certified mechanic will come right to your location and get this resolved for you. I have a 2002 toyota camry LE engine wich i want to use on a 2004 toyota camry XLE .is my 02 toyota camry engine compatible ?
ANSWER : Hi there. Assuming that both engines are the same size, the compatibility of "fitting" should be OK. However, since this is a service we don’t offer, we’re not best suited to provide the best advice on this. I can tell you that a common problem have with replacing motors is communication with the ECU. In most cases, it will require reprogramming by a specialist in order for all the systems to work correctly.

My back up camera, navigation and radio not working in my 2010 Toyota Camry after disconnecting the battery
ANSWER : First thing I notice is you say the 120 amp fuse was blown. That requires a substantial electrical short to blow. If you disconnect the positive side battery cable and touched any metal part of the car – even for an instant – you may have created that short. Whenever disconnecting the battery, always disconnect the negative cable first. With that large of an electrical short, it is possible that the internal power amplifier of the head unit may have shorted. With any large electrical short, the power spike can easily effect any electrical component in the vehicle. Some are more sensitive than others and will not withstand even a momentary short. It is also possible there is a software issue with the head unit. If you want to retain the original unit, then a trip to your local Toyota dealership for a diagnosis is the best thing to do. Another option is to try a reputable stereo repair and installation shop to explore options of repairing or replacing the existing unit.

Car overheating, rocking while idle and heater stopped working. 2000 Toyota Camry.
ANSWER : Hi there:

Anytime there is major damage done to an engine; the risk of having a mechanical failure in the future is very likely. It’s very possible, if your engine is overheating, but not leaking coolant and the engine stopped running that the head gasket may be damaged. However, without being there to physically inspect your vehicle; that’s simply a guess. I’d suggest that you contact a local mobile mechanic to complete a car is overheating inspection first; so they can determine what is causing this issue you’re having; and recommend the right repairs.

My 2010 kia blower fan stopped working but was fine last week. This occurred a few times in past. Works fine then stops blowing ag
ANSWER : The blower switch and the plug connection on the back of the switch, as well as a faulty blower motor are likely, too. I would check the blower motor first as you can easily power the motor directly to see if it runs. If the circuit includes a blower motor resistor block, of course be sure to check if the resistor block has continuity (specified resistance in ohms) at each position. If the blower motor runs, I would check the switch as occasionally there will be a bad connection at the switch that eventually causes the blower not to work. The relay is easy to test and if it works consistently as commanded, you can assume there is no intermittent fault. Obviously, check the fuse in the circuit, too, but if the fuse is bad, that means there is a problem in the circuit that will have to be repaired. Fuses blow due to electrical faults (e,g., short circuits). If you desire, a certified mechanic from YourMechanic can diagnose the problem you are having in an electrical component diagnostic.

When accelerating after a complete stop, turning corners, coming to a complete stop or randomly when Parked a very odd vibrating
ANSWER : Hello, thank you for writing in. The vehicle may be suffering from several different issues. In this type of situation you want to start with the least complicated option, and work your way up. Start by making sure your tires are properly inflated, and have them balanced. Your brakes may be playing a role, and you will want to start by cleaning them off with some brake cleaner, and make sure nothing is stuck between the pad and the rotor. You can then raise the vehicle and manipulate the wheel looking for excess play, damaged axles and joints, and damaged wheel bearings. From there you may need to look into the wheel assembly itself and make sure there is nothing mechanically wrong, dirty, or damaged.
