Just had cluster replaced on a 2005 Ford freestyle. Filled up tank and a day later was driving car fuel tank light came on

Just had cluster replaced last Friday. Filled tank on this Friday. Was driving fuel tank light came on and fuel gauge went to empty. Turned car off and back on fuel tank light was off and gauge was full.

My car has 97000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hi there. The only mechanical item that might cause the fuel gauge to act this way would be some malfunction within the EVAP vent solenoid system. However, if this occurred right after replacing the instrument cluster, it’s more likely due to an electrical fault that occurred during the installation. I would contact the company or mechanic that completed the instrument cluster installation to ask them if they can take a look at this issue, as it is likely an installation fault and not mechanical.

The most common reasons a Ford Freestyle speedometer isn`t working are the vehicle speed sensor (VSS), a faulty speedometer, or an electrical issue.
The fuel filter is positioned in the line leading from the gas tank to the engine and prevents containments from getting inside the engine, which could lead to a loss in performance and potential damage to the cylinder lining.
If both your odometer and speedometer are not working, then it`s likely your speed sensor needs to be replaced. These are easily installed and located near the back of your transmission. If only your odometer is busted, then it`s likely the gears that turn the odometer have broken.
The fuel pump shut-off switch has a red reset button on top of it.
Note: The fuel pump shut off switch reset button is usually located either under the dash in the driver compartment or under the driver or passenger seat. Just move the seat forward and pull back on the carpet or popping off the cover under the seat to access the switch.
If the fuel pump relay fails, it will cut off power to the fuel pump which will render it inoperable, and therefore silent, when the ignition is on. While the fuel pump relay is a very simple component, it plays a very important role in the proper operation of the vehicle.
Peeling Paint. Corroding aluminum hoods is a common problem among Ford vehicles, especially those manufactured from 2000-2007. According to reports, the hoods of many Freestyles made in these model years are prone to rust and corrosion.
The typical fuel filter for most fuel-injected cars consists of a high-pressure canister filled with filtering media. Filters may have clamped, threaded or special fittings to ensure reliable connection to the fuel system. Filters for carbureted engines may be located at the inlet of the carburetor or inline.

Warning lights may stay on or come on when they should not. The needles on the gauges may not move, or they may move erratically. The cluster may be dim, or the lights may flicker. If you notice any of these problems, you should take your vehicle to a mechanic or car dealership to have it checked out.
Your speedometer is directly linked to the speed sensor — meaning if anything goes wrong with the vehicle speed sensor, it`ll lead to a speedometer failure. Whether you have hall effect or digital speed sensors, here are some signs of a bad sensor that may accompany your erratic speedometer needle: Transmission issues.
Why is my Ford speedometer not working? A lot of things can contribute to a faulty speedometer. Worn out or damaged drive gears, wiring problems, bent axles, faulty speedometer head, and faulty speed sensor are a few of the common things that can cause an inaccurate reading on your Ford speedometer.
Yes, a blown fuse can cause a speedometer to stop working. The speedometer fuse is located in the fuse box and controls the power supply to both the speedometer and odometer.

I just had the fuel fill inlet replace and the gas door light came on again. Seems like the light comes on from driving in rain or going through a car wash. What is happening?
ANSWER : Hi there. If water is getting into the fuel door and flooding the gas cap area, first check the gas cap for a good seal. The cap should seal the fuel and vapors in and not leak out. If the cap is leaking, then when water gets into the fuel door compartment, the water can get into the fuel tank causing the engine to stall out. The fuel door is there just to cover the fuel filler neck and gas cap and lock out the cap from being exposed to the outside of the vehicle. I recommend replacing the gas cap if its not sealing. If you need further assistance with your vehicle, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you with your fuel inlet message that appears on your dash screen.

The CHECK FUEL FILL INLET message came on while I was driving down the highway and had not fueled in several days.
ANSWER : Try removing the gas cap and putting it back on. While the gas cap is off, check the seal on the cap and see if there is any cracks or damage to the seal. If the seal is good and the gas cap is replaced with a new cap and the message is still coming on, then check the fuel filler neck for any fuel leaks. In moisture conditions, the fuel lines and rubber hoses can expand and collapse causing fuel vapors to leak out. If you need further assistance with your fuel filler neck issue, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.

ANSWER : The switch you are referring to is vended with the required electrical and fuel schematic (I just looked in the box) that answers your installation question. If you want an advance view, here is a link as well. Yes, you need a return line and just refer to the aforementioned link. If you are retrofitting back to OEM, I strongly encourage you to buy the original Factory Service Manual (FSM). There are lots of details attending this system and obviously it is difficult to recount it all here. The FSM will make your life much easier and you can then make sure your installation is perfect. Alternatively, YourMechanic can dispatch a certified mechanic and perform the whole retrofit and check out if you desire. Just request and schedule a generic service such as fuel pump service and the mechanic will come to your location and estimate the parts and labor required. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.

I was driving and my car started to slow down, and my gas pedal wouldn’t work, and all the signs came on and the car light was flickering
ANSWER : Hi, thanks for writing in. It sounds like your battery has crashed. When the system voltage drops below a certain point, the electronics go haywire. The alternator is supposed to maintain the battery voltage at around 14 volts, and I’m guessing that your’s is not working. When the alternator stops charging, the car can continue to run on stored energy in the battery for a few hours, until the voltage falls below about 10 volts, then all those crazy things start happening.

It’s hard to say without hearing it, but the "airplane" noise may be coming from your failed alternator. I don’t recommend running out and buying a new alternator right away, the battery needs to be fully charged or replaced so that you can have a proper tests performed.

Charging or installing a battery, or even jumping one off, is a risky business on a modern car. Connecting the cables incorrectly for even a moment can do a lot of expensive damage to the various modules in your car.

I would recommend having an expert from YourMechanic come to your home or office to confirm a diagnosis on the issue and make or suggest the necessary repairs or replacements.

in my car battery warning light appearing while driving.so I have replaced both battery and alternater still light is on
ANSWER : As you may yourself have seen, there are many reports of this fault with the Civic, that is a battery or alternator is replaced only to have the warning light fail to extinguish despite checking every conceivable electrical possibility. Your only recourse is to have a certified mechanic go through that exercise with your car and that involves first attempting to "re-set" the light. If the warning light returns, the alternator output has to be carefully measured both loaded and unloaded. All terminal connections have to be verified including all grounds. Fuses have to be checked for integrity (continuity) and the possibility of shorts, in for example dash wiring, has to be checked. To request this repair, simply request an electrical components diagnostic and the responding certified mechanic will seek a resolution to this.

My car stutters after driving it for a few minutes – 2002 Toyota
ANSWER : This may also be caused by what is called the fuel pressure regulator. This is a unit that helps to maintain the fuel pressure at the proper level. When this is not working properly, the fuel pump may be pumping properly, but the fuel may not arrive at the fuel injectors at the proper psi. When this happens, this can cause a lean fuel condition which may cause the car to hesitate, misfire or stall. I would recommend having an expert from YourMechanic come to your location to diagnose your fuel pressure.

ANSWER : Hello, and thank you for writing in. The symptoms and the code that you have received are both synonymous with an issue with the mass airflow sensor, or a faulty oxygen sensor. Either way, between the two sensors and their systems, your vehicle is having trouble regulating the fuel and air mixture that is being sent to the engine. Typically this is a simple sensor issue. You can either switch both sensors, or you can do some further electrical testing to see which sensor has failed. Now concerning the starter not having power to crank over the engine, you may have a dead or faulty battery on top of these other issues. The original issue would not stop the vehicle from cranking, from starting yes, but the starter would still engage. Try having the battery tested, or installing a new one depending on its age.
