I need to replace my catalytic converter and I wanted to see what are the main parts I will need to buy that comes with it?

I'm going to replace my catalytic converter but I wanted to see what are the main little parts that come with the catalytic converter. Is their a gasket(s), rubber joints, small springs that I will need to buy with the cat? And their are times when my car won't turn on, until I spray a starting fluid and while turning the key and car fights to turn on, a part in engine sounds like gears are rattling? I have replaced the alternator. Is it the starter?

My car has 121200 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
The parts required to change out a catalytic convertor will really depend on what type of converter is going to be used. There are factory type replacements that will use a flange and just get bolted into place, that will require a new flange gasket and pipe clamp. Or there are aftermarket replacements that will require the pipe to be cut, and either welded, or clamped into place. Other than that, I would suggest that this is the perfect time to replace the oxygen sensor. Keep in mind, when removing the flange from the back of the engine, it is fairly common for the bolts and/or studs to break, due to all of the heat cycles that are associated with the exhaust/converter. As far as the rough starting issue, I would check the timing chain and tensioners. It sounds like there may be a possible issue with chain tensioner, and this can cause all kinds of problems, especially throwing off the timing and causing rough starting and running issues. If any of this sounds like something you could use a hand in diagnosing and/or repairing, contact a certified mechanic, like the mobile mechanics at YourMechanic.com.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced mechanics :

Catalytic converters change harmful emissions into harmless gas, and they need to be replaced only if they become clogged or otherwise damaged and can`t function properly. They`re expensive to replace, so they aren`t considered a regular maintenance item.
The average cost for a Dodge Avenger Catalytic Converter Replacement is between $3,000 and $3,030. Labor costs are estimated between $117 and $147 while parts are priced between $2,883 and $2,883.
The O2 sensor senses oxygen levels. The catalytic converter catalyses hydrocarbons to CO2, nitrates and water. The two items have no relationship. You can remove either without them affecting each other.
Maybe. It may be fixable if you catch a catalytic converter in the early stages of failure. However, it will probably need to be replaced if it is discolored, warped, rattling, or smells like sulfur.
Driving with A Failed Catalytic Converter

If you`re noticing slow powertrain performance, reduced acceleration, a smell of rotten eggs or sulfur from the exhaust, dark exhaust smoke, or extreme heat from under the vehicle, these are symptoms of a clogged Catalytic Converter, and it should be replaced quickly.

Depending on the engine design, vehicles can have multiple oxygen sensors, sometimes on both sides of the engine. Reading the trouble codes will tell you exactly which sensor is in need of replacing — either the upstream (top) or downstream (bottom) sensor — and on what bank (side) of the engine.
Not necessarily. For example, if the catalytic converter fails because of cracked welds or because the element inside broke up into tiny pieces, the oxygen sensors will be fine (usually there`s an upstream and a downstream oxygen sensor in modern vehicles).
The catalytic converter, or cat for short, is responsible for removing harmful emissions from the exhaust. If the two O2 sensors collectively sense that the oxygen levels don`t change significantly after running through the cat, it`s a sign of a bad catalytic converter.
Since O2 sensors are so critical to your car`s system, it`s recommended to replace your sensors every 60,000 to 90,000 miles.

It is best to have one welded on but if you cannot have it welded on, you can clamp it on with no leaks. If you need further assistance with your catalytic converter replacement, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.
A catalytic converter uses precious metal catalysts, like platinum, rhodium, and palladium — members of the Platinum Group Metal (PGM). Out of the three, rhodium is the most expensive today.

Additionally, driving without one can be dangerous because your vehicle won`t accelerate properly. You may also notice that your car has lesser power in lower gears. Therefore, replacing the catalytic converter is important and should not be delayed.

Check Engine light comes on, mechanic replaced o2 sensor but light still comes on.
ANSWER : Hi there:

If the mechanic completed the O2 sensor replacement, reset the codes and the error code was triggered again, it is possible that the catalytic converter is damaged and needs to be replaced. However, it’s also very common for the electrical harnesses that power these sensors to become frayed, damaged or faulty; which can also trigger the check engine light. It’s not advisable to drive a vehicle with a damaged catalytic converter for extended periods of time, as it can cause damage to internal engine components.

Hi Mr. Nicholas: Engine light of my Accord Lx 2010 comes on. I want to be sure the problem is with the catalytic converter or O2 s
ANSWER : Hi there. In short, yes – it is highly probable that the check engine light is not 100% caused by the catalytic converter. Most OBD-II trouble codes related to this system are actually caused by O2 sensor failure, electrical harness failure to O2 and the catalytic converter or other emissions systems. On your Honda, there is one catalytic converter, that is comprised of a few individual sections. When it it replaced however, it is replaced as a single unit. In most cases, when a Honda dealership tells you that the catalytic converter is the source, 80% of the time they are correct. I would recommend reading this article and asking yourself if you are experiencing more than 50% of these are occurring.

Check engine light is on for the catalytic converter , I fixed one about a year ago. Is there a part needed, Frontback? Which part
ANSWER : Since your vehicle has a V shaped engine, it will likely have two catalytic converters. Since the engine is mounted transversly in the vehicle (because it is front wheel drive) there will be one converter on the front and one on the rear. If you had one replaced, it is likely the issue is coming from the opposite converter. I would recommend having your exhaust system inspected by a qualified professional who has experience in exhaust system diagnosis and repair.

Do i need to replace the receiver drier and/or the expansion valve when replacing the condenser assembly?
ANSWER : Replacing the system drier is absolutely essential. If the system has been open to the atmosphere (due to the leak in the condenser), the desiccant in the drier has been fully saturated with moisture. As far as the expansion valve, replacement is not normally implicated in a leak repair, in your case a leak in the condenser. To justify replacing the expansion valve, there would have to have been a diagnostic performed which proved a fault. If no diagnostic was performed, and there is no evidence of a fault, then it is pointless to replace the valve. But, again, drier replacement is absolutely essential. To add the drier to your order, you can simply add a note to the mechanic in your order and/or add it as a service (you will see a link that you can click on to "add services" or write in specific services). pls how many o2 sensors would i need to buy to replace the ones i have and which product is best for a ford edge
ANSWER : Hello, the number of O2 sensors you have will depend on what kind of engine your vehicle is equipped with. The 4 cylinder 2.0 has 2 sensors and all the other V6 engines have 4 sensors. The sensors are only made by two manufacturers, NGK and Bosch. Both are great sensors and niether one stands out as better than the other. I doubt you have 4 bad sensors and converters in your vehicle. You should get a second opinion on the problem, unless you made a mistake like putting diesel in a gas motor or something. Good luck.

What parts would I need to replace in the AC system of my 2004 Chevrolet Blazer
ANSWER : Hello. If there is just a leak in a hose then only the hose needs to be replaced then the system needs to be evacuated and recharged. If the compressor is bad then it needs to be replace along with the accumulator and the expansion valve. There really is no reason to replace the entire system unless there is a catastrophic compressor failure. You should find another air conditioning specialist to take it to in order to get a second opinion.

Good morning Allen, I need to have my 2009 Buick Enclave’s catalytic converter replaced. The dealer quoted me $977. Is that a good
ANSWER : Hi. The price they quoted you at the dealership is not that bad but you could probably get a better price at midas or a local exhaust shop. By federal law your catalytic convertor has a 10 year warranty on it and should be replaced by the dealership under warranty. I suggest you ask your local dealership about the warranty for catalytic convertor.
