Car will crank but no start… Fuel pump not coming on. New pump, relay, etc. Will start when hot wire runs from pump wires to bat

We have replaced the fuel pump and relays. Car will crank with hot wire from fuel pump wire harness to battery. ( Wires not getting connection) Tested with test light. When running, car will sometimes stall at red lights or stop signs. Replaced fusebox and car ran for two weeks no problems. but all of a sudden car wouldnt start again, only by hot wire.

My car has 174546 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
There are a couple of approaches to take here – either start from the battery and work "towards" the fuel pump, fuse box, ignition switch, fuel pump relay, and wiring connections in between. Or, as you have done, start at the pump with 12v, and move backwards towards the battery. This will require a GM service manual, or wiring diagram at least, with connection locations as well.

I would recommend having a certified technician from YourMechanic diagnose this starting issue, get an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs. YourMechanic.com can dispatch a mobile, professional mechanic to your location for this repair.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced mechanics :

The root of the problem is likely a dead battery. The rapid clicking noise you`re hearing is likely the last of the battery`s charge. Notice if your car lights are dim when you try to turn the ignition—dim lights will be another indicator that the problem is in the battery.
The most common reasons a Chevrolet Impala won`t start are a dead battery, an alternator problem, or failed starter.
It might be a battery or alternator problem.

Perhaps your battery`s dead, or your alternator, which charges the battery, isn`t working correctly. If the source of the clicking is electrical, the starter (a small motor energized by the battery that gets the engine running) doesn`t have enough juice to stay powered.

Usually a rapid clicking noise is a good indication that your starter motor isn`t getting enough electrical current to engage – basically your solenoid is trying to engage but can`t make the connection.
This usually means the battery is bad and incapable of handling a huge request for power to crank the engine over. Headlights begin white and bright, when you try to start the engine, they dim to nothing or almost nothing then as soon as you let go of the key, the headlights QUICKLY bounce back to white and bright.
Bad Sensors

One common culprit for this problem is the crankshaft position sensor, which measures the position and speed of the crankshaft. The computer uses the information from this sensor to know when to fire the spark plugs. If the sensor isn`t working, the spark plugs won`t fire, keeping the engine from starting.

The fuel pump shut-off switch has a red reset button on top of it.
The flex fuel sensor is mounted in the fuel line between the fuel tank and injectors.
The most common reasons a Chevrolet Impala engine makes a ticking noise are low oil level or pressure, an issue with the ignition system, or an exhaust leak.

Just replaced my fuel pump but its not getting any power tested fuel pump relay and fuel fuse both good tested the wires all good.
ANSWER : You need to look at the theft light on dash to make sure it comes on and goes off when you turn the key to the on position. If light comes on and stays on then your theft system is causing the fuel pump to not be engaged. I recommend you check the theft system and then scan the computer for theft system codes. You may need to reprogram the keys to work or you have an bad sensor for the ignition key in the steering column.

Car sounds like its not getting fuel cranks normal. Fuel pump is working. Fuses and relays good. crank no start. No codes
ANSWER : Hi There,
Try starting the car and if it does not start, turn the key off and then pull one of the spark plugs out to see if it is wet with fuel. If the spark plug is dry, then you know you have a fuel supply problem. If the spark plug is wet with fuel, I would suggest next checking for spark issues such as a failed ignition coil. Ignition coils are prone to randomly failing and causing the car to not start without warning as you describe. I would suggest having a professional from YourMechanic come to your location to take a look at your vehicle.

Car wont stay running. Will start up but shuts back off. Fuel pump doesnt come on. Car will run with wire from battery to wire har
ANSWER : Hello, thank you for writing in. With the testing you have done, we know the fuel pump is good, and that the rest of the system is functional. This leave the electrical circuit. There are a few components in the fuel pump circuit which could be causing the issue. The first to check is the fuel pump fuse/relay. If you have a voltmeter, you can trace the power from the battery to the fuse box, and along the circuit until you find the point in which power is lost. This is the fastest way to pinpoint the exact location of the problem. A visual inspection may also show you if there is a loose or disconnected wire, or excess corrosion somewhere causing extra resistance. I put a fuel pump in and a fuel pump relay. The relay works but there is no power to the fuel pump.
ANSWER : Hi there. There could be an issue with the wiring to the fuel pump between the fuel pump relay and the fuel pump. Remove the wiring to the fuel pump and check the resistance from the wiring from the relay to the fuel pump. There should be no more than 1 ohm of resistance. If there is more resistance than 1 ohm, then there is a break or corrosion in the wiring. Also, check the ground circuit and make sure that the fuel pump is getting a proper ground. If you need further assistance with your fuel pump not operating, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.

Why does my car only run if we bypass the fuel pump relay on my 1998 Acura RL
ANSWER : Hi there. If the car will run with the relay bypassed then the fuel pump is fine. If the relay is fine also then the control for the circuit has a failure. Most of the time this is caused by an issue with the ignition switch or the vehicles main relay. Typically it is the ignition switch though. I would usually start by doing a voltage drop test of the ignition switch followed by testing the main relay. This will help to identify the problem. If you need to have this fuel system problem repaired, consider YourMechanic, as a certified mechanic can come to you to [diagnose why the car will not start] https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/car-is-not-starting-inspection

My car stutter starts, but only after driving it for a few minutes.
ANSWER : Hey there. This may also be caused by what is called the fuel pressure regulator. This is a unit that helps to maintain the fuel pressure at the proper level. When this is not working properly, the fuel pump may be pumping properly, but the fuel may not arrive at the fuel injectors at the proper psi. When this happens, this can cause a lean fuel condition which may cause the car to hesitate, misfire, or stall. If you would like to have an expert pinpoint the issue, a certified professional from YourMechanic can come to your car’s location to inspect the hard start problem and confirm which repairs are needed.

Why does my Tahoe start with the fuel pump relay pulled out or left in?
ANSWER : Hi there. Check to see what relay you have pulled. If indeed you removed the fuel pump relay and the engine still starts up, then check the oil pressure switch. An oil pressure switch will kept the engine running as it passes battery voltage to the fuel pump. When the engine builds up oil pressure, the oil pressure switch sends voltage to the fuel pump and bypasses the fuel pump relay. Unplug the oil pressure switch and see if the engine stops running. If you need further assistance troubleshooting your vehicle, then seek out a technician, such as one from Your Mechanic, who can assist you with why your vehicle is still running with the fuel system relay removed.
