A question regarding my car blowing intermittently hot and cold air.

My cars air condition intermittently blows hot and cold air. When in gear cold air comes out and if in neutral or parked it blows hot air. I also noticed lately the temperature of the car will go up and down. If in neutral it tends to run hot as with blowing hot air if driving the temperature will go back down in the air will get cool.

My car has 140000 miles.
My car has a manual transmission.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
It sounds like you have failed cooling fans. When the car is at idle, the fans should run to pull air across the A/C condenser to regulate refrigerant temperatures and the radiator to regulate coolant temperature. If these fans fail, then these components will receive no airflow at idle, but will still get airflow while driving due to the car moving. I would suggest having a qualified technician, such as one from YourMechanic, inspect your fan operation, as well as the rest of the cooling system for proper operation.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

If your A/C flip-flops from hot to cold and back again, your expansion valve could be failing. The expansion valve removes pressure from liquid refrigerant to allow expansion from a liquid to a vapor state in the evaporator. If the valve is blocked, the refrigerant flow could be restricted or could be too unrestricted.
Reasons a Hyundai Tucson Heater Isn`t Working. The most common reasons a Hyundai Tucson heater isn`t working are a broken heater blower motor, a problem with the thermostat, or a failed heater blower motor resistor. Search our network of RepairPal Certified shops near you to speak with a technician about your issue.
The most common reasons a Hyundai Tucson ac isn`t working are a refrigerant leak, an electrical climate control issue, or a problem with the air conditioning compressor. You may not realize there`s a refrigerant leak until the air conditioner stops blowing cold.
Signs of a Faulty Sensor

You might notice that your air conditioner doesn`t turn off when the house reaches the set temperature if you have a faulty sensor, Your AC will just continue to blow cold air. The temperature may even become uncomfortably cold.

Filters are there to collect dirt, dust, and other pollutants that try to enter your home. Once the filters are too dirty, they restrict airflow which can cause the AC to blow hot and cold air when you only want cold air. Regularly cleaning or having your filter changed is part of the necessary unit maintenance.
In general, it`s because something`s wrong within the cooling system and heat isn`t able to escape the engine compartment. The source of the issue could include a cooling system leak, faulty radiator fan, broken water pump, or clogged coolant hose.
The most common causes of broken air conditioning are leaks or compressor issues. If your air is blowing cool but not cold, the problem could be a clogged filter, cooling fan problem, radiator trouble, or it could simply be that you need to recharge your AC.
If your air conditioner is running, but not lowering temperatures inside, one issue could be a blocked or clogged condenser coil. When operating correctly, the condenser fan draws air into the outdoor unit through the condenser coil to pull heat energy out of your home.
Like every electrical component in your vehicle, multiple factors can be contributing to a climate control system issue. Faulty vents, a broken interior temperature sensor, failing fan motors, degraded fan relays, a refrigerant fuel leak and an insufficient amount of coolant in the engine.
If your filter is dirty or clogged, your AC can`t pull in as much air as it needs to per cycle. If your AC pulls in less air, it cools less air and pumps less cooled air throughout your home.
Faulty heater cores and low or contaminated coolant levels often come hand in hand, and both issues may lead to your engine overheating and your heater not blowing hot air.
Refrigerant Leak

A car A/C blowing hot air is often the result of a refrigerant leak. Refrigerant is a liquid that circulates through your car`s A/C system, expanding and contracting as it removes heat and humidity from the cabin.

My air is blowing cold-hot-cold-hot-cold-hot…
ANSWER : It is possible that you have a leak in the AC system. There are pressure switches that will turn off the compressor if the pressure is too high or too low. The low refrigerant level could cause the AC compressor to cycle on and off. If you would like to have this done, a certified technician from YourMechanic can come to your car’s location to diagnose the AC system and make the correct repair.

While driving defroster set to hot blows hot air as it should, while idling it is blowing cold air.
ANSWER : First, the coolant level should be checked to make sure the radiator is full. While the overflow tank may be full, the radiator cap must be taken off to check the level inside the radiator. If you find the level is very low, you have a coolant leak that must be fixed. If coolant levels are normal, an engine thermostat or heater control problem may be what you’re experiencing. Consider hiring an experienced technician like one from YourMechanic who can come out and take a closer look at your lack of heat concern to offer a more personal diagnosis.

Hot air mixed with cold blows from air conditioning
ANSWER : Hey there. You will most likely have to have a mechanic bypass the heater coolant lines to have this resolved. Your A/C may not be controlling the air flow inside the evaporator correctly out of the vents and may be the blend door actuator stuck in the heat position. Have the AC system diagnosed first before bypassing the heater.

everytime I turn my car on the ac starts to blow air even if I switch it off. it won’t blow cold air or heat.
ANSWER : Hi there. Based on your question and input, it looks like your AC control switches are damaged, causing the vents to activate even if the switch is not activated. This is sometimes an electrical problem, as it could be triggered by a damaged electrical relay. You might want to have a professional mechanic complete an AC is not working inspection, so they can determine what is causing this issue you’re experiencing and recommend the right repair.

Why is my car blowing hot air and cold air at the same time?
ANSWER : The answer to this depends on whether you have switched on heating, cooling (A/C) or neither. In one scenario, for example, if you have not switched on the A/C system, but the A/C is running as confirmed by a visual check of the A/C compressor, and you are getting cool air obviously there is an electrical problem. The coincidental heating could be due to a blend door malfunction. If the only thing you did was remove electrical or electronic components, it would appear that you have an electrical malfunction in the controls. I recommend you request an HVAC diagnostic and the responding certified mechanic will get this resolved for you. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.

My car heater will blow hot air and drive fine for 30 minutes then my heater blows cold air and my car overheats
ANSWER : Hello. With the recent repairs that have been made to the vehicle, there is only one main heating component that you have not looked into. This would be your heater core. The heater core is responsible for pulling hot coolant from the engine. This hot coolant runs through the heater core as the ambient air is pushed through to warm before entering the cabin. If the coolant can’t flow through the heater core, then the air will blow cold. This can be caused by a clog, a faulty switch, or a process known as electrolysis (electrical current running through coolant). Unless there is a clog that can be dislodged, these issues will all result in a new heater core. To get a precise diagnosis of the problem, I recommend having an expert inspect the overheating problem so this can be resolved.

When idling, car overheats and A/C blows hot air – 2001 Saturn L100
ANSWER : Hello. The most likely cause of the issue that your are having would be a faulty cooling fan. The cooling fans purpose is to keep the radiator and condenser for the air conditioning cool during the idling function of the vehicle.

If the cooling fan is not working, this will cause the radiator and condenser to get very hot. When the radiator and condenser get hot, this can cause the vehicle to overheat and the air conditioning not to work. When the vehicle is driving at higher speeds, the force of air that is created towards the vehicle will flow through the radiator and condenser and therefore keep them cool. I would recommend having the cooling fan checked to make sure that it is working properly. If not, I would recommend having the cooling fan replaced.
