A problem with my headlight control sensor and navigation changing to night and day mode.

How much would it be to replace my headlight control sensor on my 2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid and if the sensor is bad would it cause my navigation system not to change from day to night mode when it is being used? I have a hard time believing it would cause my navigation system not to switch to night and day mode.

My email is [email protected] Thank you for your help.

Hello Sharon, thank you for writing in. The headlight control module utilizes a photocell which detects the sunlight. The navigation system shares this information so it knows when to automatically change into "night mode". The module may be malfunctioning and need to be replaced, or the photocell itself may be damaged or covered with something. The price for replacing this unit will depend on the time spent for diagnostics, any time spent on the repair, and the part. Force Light or Dark Mode in Android Auto

To access it, open the Android Auto app on your phone, which will jump right to the settings menu since Android Auto doesn`t work on phone screens now. Here, select the Day/Night mode for maps field and choose Automatic, Day, or Night.

If you`re running the app on Android Auto, Google Maps can receive information like the status of the headlights. If you turn on the headlights, which you typically do at night, Google Maps automatically switches to the dark mode to reduce the eye strain in the cabin.
Waze is finally getting a full-fledged dark mode.
On Android, tap the hamburger menu in the top-left corner and select Settings > General > Theme. Choose between a light or dark theme, or have it change to the system`s default theme.
Try to Sign Out of your profile (in Google Maps). Tap profile-> Settings-> Scroll to the bottom-> Sign out) and then close the app. Open the Google Maps app and you will see the Dark theme menu item.
The Dark Mode helps reduce eye strain by keeping a minimum contrast ratio required for readability.
Dark mode is a display setting for user interfaces, such as a smartphone or laptop. It means that, instead of the default dark text showing up against a light screen (known as `light mode`), a light colour text (white or grey) is presented against a dark or black screen.
The location that was selected on the map was not a street. When you click on Show street view , you will redirected to street view at the latitude and longitude of where you clicked. If there is no street view available for this point in Google Maps, then you will only see a black screen.
Use the system setting by navigating to Settings > Display > Theme to enable dark theme. Use the Quick Settings tile to switch themes from the notification tray, when enabled.

Getting the code P0500. Changed both NC & NT sensors. Can’t pull out the vehicle speed sensor (VSS).
ANSWER : Hi there. The code P0500 is in reference with the vehicle speed sensor. The possible causes that contribute for this code to appear are:

The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) is not reading properly
There is a broken or frayed wire going to the vehicle speed sensor
The vehicle’s ECM (computer) is not correctly configured for the actual tire size on the vehicle

If you need to replace the VSS, then check to see if there is any mounting bolt and remove the bolt before taking off the sensor. The sensor will have some pressure on it but not a hole lot. You may have to put a pry bar on the sensor and pop it out. Make sure that you have a drip pan under the sensor as it will drain out some fluid. Top off the transmission fluid when you have the new sensor installed. If you need further assistance with the P0500 code, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.

O2 sensors changed, but check engine light still showing code after clearing it I checked fuse. Wires are good and used Denso OE.
ANSWER : Depending on what the code was for will determine if the oxygen sensor was to be replaced. If the conditions were for a rich or lean mixture and it said oxygen sensor, then the spark plugs and wires could need replaced if its a rich reading or the fuel injectors could be clogged or not working if its a lean mixture. If the code said that the oxygen sensor was bad, then check the harness and see if there is a break in the wiring or a short to ground in the wiring from the oxygen sensor to the main harness. If you need further assistance with your check engine light being on, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.

I shifted the lever to drive mode, but it goes to reverse mode. What is the problem?
ANSWER : You are very nearly right. There is a bowden type cable that connects the the shifter to the transmission. It has adjustable ends and one or more of those adjustments has probably worked loose. That or you might need a new shift cable or new bushings at the connections. Either way, you can have the problem conveniently solved by contacting Your Mechanic. They will send a technician to your home or office to check out your shifter and transmission and tell you exactly what you need to repair it. Meanwhile, be very careful with this car, it might not go into park when you expect it to so be sure to set the brake and park it very carefully.

I had my crank sensor and cam sensor changed last March, supposedly it went out in August and was changed again.
ANSWER : Hi, we will be happy to help how we can. Your vehicle should not have been handled like that. I can’t imagine the level of stress you’ve been enduring. A faulty computer will not cause a timing chain to go bad, unless it has variable valve timing. Your vehicle does not have variable valve timing. I would ask them to explain exactly what faults the timing chain has that makes replacement required. Is it stretched, broken, or is it just off of timing. These are questions that should be asked. After all you’ve been through with them they were should be willing to give you some type of proof that the vehicle needs what they’ve specified. It sounds like they may be throwing parts at the vehicle without actually diagnosing it, hoping it will fix your problem. Since you already have a lawyer on the case I believe that will be the best thing. You may want to check reviews from other customers to see if they have similar experiences to help strengthen your case.

Climate control no mode function?
ANSWER : Hello, thanks for writing in. I’d be happy to help.

From what you describe it appears that your vehicle is experiencing some sort of electrical issue. It may be possible that the some sort of wiring problem has occurred, or that the components you replaced are defective. I would carefully inspect the vehicle for any wiring issues, though from what you describe, the unit operating in reverse, it is more likely that the component is defective. It is not uncommon for aftermarket components to be defective out of the box, so if you suspect the component may be defective, I would replace it. A wiring diagram can be sourced from either the dealership, or out of a quality service manual.

If you would like help inspecting the electrical components, consider having an expert automotive technician from YourMechanic come to your home or office to inspect and diagnose this issue for you, and make any repairs as needed.

Hi I have a 2004 2.4L automatic Hyundai Sonata. I change the timing belt as it has chewed teeth. I also change the headgasket and
ANSWER : Hi there. Since you completed so many different repairs, it unfortunately opens the door to multiple possible issues that might be the source of your hard to start issue. The first thing I would do is knock off the easy checks; by verifying that all electrical connections, fuel and / or vacuum lines are correctly attached. If everything checks out there, I would either replace the wiring harness to the crankshaft position sensor or check the output from the PCM. Most of the time when crankshaft position sensor issues exist, it’s the wiring harness itself that is faulty. Try those steps and if you still need a hand diagnosing your problem, feel free to contact one of our mobile mechanics and they can come to your location and complete a car is hard to start inspection.

Switch to Manual mode, but gears don’t seem to change any more in that mode.
ANSWER : This is an internal problem with the shift switch on the transmission selector. The transmission would need to be tested to see if it is a defective selector switch, or the transmission valve body problem. The system would need to be tested since the system goes through the transmission control module and sends signals on the computer network to the dash display. If the system is in a failure mode, then it may not let you go into manual mode. Have the transmission checked just in case the system has an internal failure.
