Truck tries to start itself

Speedometer was not working. Replaced Vss on back of tyranny. Battery was dead so I jump started it. Everything worked fine. The next morning there was a clicking sound that would occur every five seconds without a key in the ignition. The battery was dead once again so I jumped it off. The truck started fine but then acted as if it was trying to start even though it was already running. I then replaced starter relay on the firewall and problem still persist. Then I was reading that the ignition switch might need to be replaced. I took old ignition switch out. Went to put new one in and it di
Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hi there. Check the battery and see if it has a charge of 12.6 volts. If the battery is low on charge, then charge up the battery and then remove the negative battery cable (-) from the battery. Then fix up the ignition switch to the new switch. Since the old switch is giving you trouble, put the new switch back in and make sure that the key works. Then take a digital meter and check for a voltage on the negative battery cable (-) to the negative battery post (-). If there is a battery voltage, then go in the vehicle and turn on items in the cab with the ignition switch off. When the meter reads 0 volts or near 0, then that item is on all the time and causing the battery to discharge itself. A dead battery or a low charged battery will cause the relays, resistors, and the electrical system to act up and not function correctly. If you need further assistance with your vehicle trying to start when it’s already running, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced mechanics :

The most common reasons a Ford F-150 won`t start are a dead battery, an alternator problem, or failed starter.
The immobilizer warning light turns on if your anti-theft system does not recognize the car key being used, if it`s the wrong key or low on battery.
Performing a System Reset

Vehicles equipped with a Power button: Press and hold both the Power button (center of the volume knob) and the Seek Right button for 10 seconds. Vehicles not equipped with a Power button: Press and hold both the Volume Down and Seek Right buttons on the steering wheel controls for 10 seconds.

Bad Sensors

One common culprit for this problem is the crankshaft position sensor, which measures the position and speed of the crankshaft. The computer uses the information from this sensor to know when to fire the spark plugs. If the sensor isn`t working, the spark plugs won`t fire, keeping the engine from starting.

If the car cranks when you turn the key, but the engine won`t start, it could be because fuel isn`t getting to the engine. One potential reason for this could be dirty fuel injectors. Over time, the fuel injector nozzles can become clogged with rust, corrosion or debris.
Broken or Damaged Ignition

If your headlights can turn on, but your car won`t crank, that means that your battery is charged, but either the starter or ignition is the problem. If the starter or ignition is the problem, a starter engine can be jumped by using a charged battery.

When the unlock button of your key fob does not work and unlock the car that means there is a problem with the engine immobiliser. The key fob will not properly send codes to the immobiliser system. In such a scenario, there might be an issue with the key`s battery or the immobiliser itself is malfunctioning.
The instrument cluster has an antenna that detects the transponder “chip” in the ignition key. With an immobilizer delete, the Engine Computer doesn`t ask the instrument cluster about the immobilizer. In other words, the car with a faulty immobilizer will still start and run – with an immobilizer delete.
A ghost immobiliser includes systems that prevent key cloning, signal jamming and device spoofing – all methods that thieves use to unlock cars with standard immobilisers. This means that even if a thief is able to somehow get into your car, they won`t be able to drive it away.
Like desktop computers and most other electronics, disconnecting the battery cable for a short period will not fully reset your ECU due to the residual power remaining in the circuits.
To perform a Hard Reset: With the ignition OFF, disconnect the power to the SYNC module buy either disconnecting the vehicle battery or the large 54 pin connector at the back of the module. Reconnect the power after 30 seconds. Turn the ignition on and wait for the system to boot.
No, factory resets do not do any harm to the battery. It only erases data from the phone. Thus note that you should backup all your documents and files before doing a factory reset. However, there is no effect on the battery.
REFLASHING – Reflashing is a proven technique where a vehicle immobilizer is programmed with a special file which restores the EEPROM to the original factory values (same condition as a new immobilizer). After reflashing and reinstallation, the vehicle will be in “learn mode” and able to accept new keys.
How to Fix. Many immobilizer problems can be fixed simply by simply replacing the battery in the key fob. Many transponder keys depend on a small battery to relay the security code to the car immobilizer. Be careful replacing the battery so you don`t accidentally damage the transponder chip inside.

Fuel pump engages. Batery good, alternator good volts, jump start helps when wont start. Temp does not matter. Intermittent?
ANSWER : Hello. Thank you for writing in. There are several reasons your vehicle may only start when jump starting. The first and most common is a build up of resistance that is causing you to need a boost of voltage to get the engine started. This may be due to poor battery cables, a bad ground connection, a poor starter solenoid, and a couple of other issues. The first thing you want to do is perform a visual inspection of the starting system. Make sure there is no corrosion build up in the battery cables. You can also check the resistance across these wires and make sure you have a solid connection between components. You then want to make sure the starter solenoid is doing its job. It is responsible for taking the small amount of electricity sent by the ignition and turning it into a huge electrical charge that is strong enough to push over the engine with the help of some gear ratios in its favor. Do some more testing, and stick to the basics before assuming its something seriously complicated.

I parked my truck for 5-10 mins. Tried to turn it on, now it wont start, called a tow tow truck 15-20mins later my truck turned on
ANSWER : It is very likely that you have a powertrain control module failure. This can happen often on many GM vehicles. I would recommend having the powertrain control module tested and replaced as necessary in order to resolve this issue. After the powertrain control module is replaced, a reflash procedure will be required so that the vehicle can relearn all of its primary engine data. Once the reflash is completed, your vehicle should no longer have this issue.

Cranks over start than dies
ANSWER : Hi There,
The idle air control valve is a small valve on the engine’s intake system that reads the air intake as it comes into the motor. This is controlled by the car’s ECM which uses this information to make adjustments to the air/fuel ratio depending on various inputs such as outside air temperature, intake air temperature, load and various other things. As you accelerate, your car’s engine is receiving a much higher dose of fuel than when at idle and conversely, when you let off the gas pedal, there is a sudden change in this fuel supply as a result of your foot letting off the pedal. When this happens, the job of the idle air control valve is to bring this deceleration down to a slow and smooth idle rather than suddenly cutting off the fuel supply causing the motor to die. When the idle air control valve is not working properly, this cause a disruption in this process resulting in the engine not being able to idle properly. I would recommend having a professional come to your location to diagnose and inspect your vehicle.

I changed the fuel pump and truck ran great for 3 days. Now after 3 days, the truck dies. It will start running for a few minutes, then dies like before.
ANSWER : Hi there, thanks for writing in. I’d be happy to help. It sounds like you should disconnect the connector to the fuel pump and inspect it for any signs of getting hot. The female connections may be too loose on the fuel pump and lose contact after running and getting hot. If there are indeed any signs of problems, then I’d suggest replacing connector and adding dielectric lube to pins before installation. This should solve the problem, but if you continue to experience issues, feel free to reach out to us for help again.

My truck died while driving. Now will start, but dies when I push brake. If I start in neutral, I can put in drive and go but dies – 2003 Ford F250
ANSWER : Hello – your symptoms suggest that once your cold start features are no longer needed – engine warming up – there is an air "leak" that ruins low speed running. Causes could be a leaking exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve, or leak in the air intake. A failing fuel pump relay (burned contacts) could cause similar behavior, contacts become hot, then won’t pass enough current to run the pump. Failing pump can also act this way – gets hot and fails. I recommend a starts, then dies inspection performed by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, and give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs.

Truck won’t start in morning. 2nd day now. Battery seems good.
ANSWER : Since the symptoms changed when you touched the battery terminal, it leads me to believe you may have a poor connection and the main battery terminals. If they are badly corroded or have any small cracks, the terminal may be too loose on the battery. You can rule out the battery by removing the connection to the vehicle then testing the battery itself. If the battery is good then reattach the terminals, tighten them and see if you are able to wiggle them on the posts. If the terminal still moves, replace the entire cable. You can cut the terminal ends and replace them, but you will never get as perfect a connection as replacing the whole cable. Consider hiring an experienced technician like one from YourMechanic who can come out and take a closer look at the loss of electrical power situation and run tests to offer a more personal diagnosis.

I put a penny in place of a fuse, tried to start my car and now it wont start and makes a grinding sound when i try to start it
ANSWER : Hi there. Putting a penny in place of a fuse, not recommended, replace with the correct fuse. The fuse is there, to protect the circuit. If the fuse blows, there is a short to ground. The grinding sound, when you try to start your vehicle, could be the starter. The starter drive could be at fault or the flywheel has a problem. I recommend having your vehicle’s no start be diagnosed and repaired by a certified technician from YourMechanic.
