Cylinder Head inspection

I have a 454 I think I over Revd I bent 6 pushrods and broke 2 on the exhaust side all intake rods are straight as it gets can I just put new pushrods and lifters in and be good or should I pull the head's off to inspect it the cam looks great i think my oil pump went out and seased the lifters what should I do ?

My car has 163000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
I would recommend pulling the cylinder heads off to inspect considering 2 of the push rods broke. This may have caused material from the broken rods to be scattered throughout the valve train or potentially other places in the motor. If any of this material gets inside a cylinder this will cause major damage to your motor, potentially scarring pistons and damaging cylinder walls.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Place a flat bar (ruler) over the entire sealing surface of the cylinder head. Place a strong light source behind the batten and observe the unevenness. Mark larger deviations. Use the measuring sheets to determine the deviations between the ruler and the surface.
Basically, there are five things you want to look for before dropping a head back on: straightness, cracks, corrosion on the head`s seating surface, damage to the valvetrain components, and leak-free valve seats.
Big-block cylinder heads cast by GM are most commonly identified by their casting numbers, which may be found in a variety of locations depending upon the particular head. However, the complete casting number is located beneath the valve cover, usually above an intake port.
The compression test works by spinning the engine through its cycles with the compression tester in place of the spark plug in the cylinder. As the engine makes pressure, the gauge will move and hold to the highest point read by the gauge. Take measurements for all cylinders and then compare the readings to each other.
Magnetic particle inspection is most often used to inspect cast iron or steel alloys that are “ferromagnetic” and can be temporarily magnetized for such things as surface cracks in and around the cylinder head combustion chambers and for inspecting crankshafts, camshafts and connecting rods.
Symptoms of cylinder failure often include overheating or misfiring. As cylinders are responsible for moving fuel, it`s also a good idea to check for any signs of leaks when you suspect an issue. Often, there is also a noticeable smell, and the engine will sometimes even issue smoke.
LPG Cylinder is checked visually for any damages and lacks on cylinder body and rings. Initial segregation of cylinders for hot repair operation requirement is done here. LPG Cylinders are inspected for corrosion, dents, cuts and other damages as producer country`s norms.
There are several main symptoms of cylinder head problems—high oil consumption, bad fuel mileage, and engine overheating to name a few. You can watch our video for more information. One of the most common cylinder head issues is cracks caused by overheating. These cracks often occur between the valves, but not always.
Cylinder heads are designed to last the lifetime of the vehicle. However, if your vehicle has a faulty cylinder head, it should be replaced as soon as possible.
Bolts should also be measured or compared to one another to check for stretch. Any bolt found to be stretched must be replaced because 1) it may be dangerously weak, 2) it won`t hold torque properly, and 3) it may bottom out when installed in a blind hole.
Each time a cylinder is filled it should be visually inspected for excessive rust, dents, gouges or cuts on its surface. The cylinder base should be tipped on its side to look for corrosion or any other evidence that the structural integrity of the cylinder might be compromised.

Replaced a ruined cylinder head with a used cylinder head
ANSWER : From what you’ve described, it sounds like you have not put the camshafts in the correct positions. You need to use special tools to hold the camshafts in the correct position before tightening the cam gear. Once the first one is done, then you go to the other head and do the same thing. This should fix the problem you’re having. If you need some assistance with this, consider YourMechanic, as a certified technician can come to your home or office to service your vehicle.

Car misfiring on cylinder three
ANSWER : Hello! We will be happy to assist. You have definitely been on the right path to finding the root of the misfire. However there are a few things left that I recommend checking. I suggest to check the spark at the spark plugs at each cylinder. There may be an issue with the coil pack causing the misfire. Also check the PCV valve because that is a known cause of a misfires on your particular vehicle. I suspect that the PCV valve and hose may be leaking and causing the misfire.

You may have the engine model which has the PCV valve located above the transmission next to the exhaust header. This engine model’s PCV valve is routinely looked over because most are unaware that there are two PCV valve systems and the first one is easily visible from the top. I also recommend checking the resistance and voltages at the coil packs with a multimeter. I have a friend whom worked as a technician at a Ford dealership once tell me of a problem with your generation of Focus in which the wiring to the coil packs were made too tight and the tension broke the wires overtime.

I would always recommend having a qualified mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, assist you in diagnosing your engine misfire and assisting you in repairs.

Do I need to replace valve lifters after having the cylinder head rebuilt on my 2001 Toyota Camry
ANSWER : Hi there. When you have the cylinder head rebuilt and a valve job done then that will change the height of the valves in the head. The lifters are set a specific thickness to offset the depth that the valves are at. The valves will need to be set to the proper clearance using the correct lifters. With that being said you cannot mix them up and just install them without having issues. This should have been done by the machine shop when the cylinder head was rebuilt.

Why does the emission inspection failed almost every time its due for DMV inspection?
ANSWER : Hi there:

Honestly, the lack of consistent driving could be the reason why you have frequent emissions issues. If the car does not run frequently and have an opportunity to circulate built up carbon deposits on the inside of the fuel injection system or exhaust system, failed emissions testing may be the result. The best thing to do is to drive your vehicle once or twice per week about a month or so before your emissions testing is needed. Also, it’s a good idea to replace air filters frequently before emissions testing is completed. This article is a good one that helps many car owners learn what they can do to help improve emissions testing.

huge oil leak honda accord
ANSWER : The flatness of the block (and heads EVEN if they are "new") has to be measured. If the block was warped, that is if the block is not perfectly flat across the entire surface to within .002 inches, the assembly will leak. To check for flatness, a high precision Machinist’s straight edge is used, typically 18 inches long. It is also possible that the block has a crack at that spot and that can be tested using standard techniques. If you find that the block and heads are perfectly flat, and there is no crack, and you are going to try another head gasket, be sure the head gasket sealing surface on the block is polished to a mirror like finish and of course the head as well. And, of course, the EXACT tightening sequence for the head (use ONLY new head bolts) must be followed as well as all of the other specifications set out in the Factory Service Manual. If you need assistance with these steps, or are unsuccessful at any stage, feel free to request that YourMechanic dispatch a certified Mechanic to assist you.
